How often do you shampoo your carpets?

For the first time in my 40+ years of marriage, I bought a carpet shampooer. Before, I always did it the hard way, with a little can of cleaner and a mop. Boo on that! The new shampooer is a light weight one -- thank goodness -- because I'm dripping with sweat just pushing that little thing around the floor. Is it that I'm getting older, or is it the humidity from damp carpet causing my pores to run like an open faucet? I think I'd vote for the raised humidity! In any event, before I bought it -- and it needs a name, I suppose, but I haven't had time to think of one -- so, before I bought it, I read the reviews. There are people who clean their carpets every week. I know. Seriously. Every week. If I had a maid, I'd have her do that. If I have to do it myself? No way! Soooo, the question is ... how often do you shampoo your carpets?

My husband has done it once or twice, with a rental machine, bless his heart. But we usually just "spot clean" after a cat has thrown up. I know; we're cavemen.

We have mostly tile in our house. I've never actually shampoo'ed the carpets. I just go get one of those rug doctors and go crazy with it. lol

Aaawww, drat! I should have given an option that said, "I prefer not to disclose that information at this time!" Oh, well.

Now that is a man worth keeping! Not sure about the cat, though, if he upchucks on your carpet. (Only kidding. All cats do that, right? It's inborn.)

That is one benefit of hardwood floors. My problem with them is they show every paw print that the Muttley makes as he walks across the floor.

Oooo tile! That sounds so lovely, and like something that never shows dirt. Not sure I've ever tried a rug doctor ... just the carpet cleaner in the can and a mop, and then you can't move the next day because you're so sore!

DorothyGale, what is wrong with you? Why did you post this comment three times? Get on the ball, woman! :)

I hate the tile lol... I'd much rather wood floors. The tile has little grooves in it to keep from sleeping and with 4 kids, I have to clean those floors nearly every day.

Wow, you got a lot of comments on your poll, Miss Dorothy :D

Shampoo carpets? I just took'em outside for mulch!

DorothyGale wrote on July 16, 2014, 6:28 PM

I know. Who'd have guessed people were so passionate about shampooing their carpets? :) And I seriously did not repeat my same comment over and over. There's a glitch, apparently.

DorothyGale wrote on July 16, 2014, 6:29 PM

That sounds like a much easier option, if you ask me! And having new carpets sounds like fun.

MaeLou ... Such a bummer. Sounds like something where you end up on your knees with a toothbrush! Not a good way to spend your day. Especially when you could be at the beach or in the pool. :) BTW ... somehow there's a glitch here. It keeps putting my very first comment written on July 15 back in again. It's here like 50 gajillion times. Oh, all right. Maybe 4 or 5 times. Help, please!

I vacuum my carpets three times a week, but I shampoo them only every 6 months. We have no kids and no animals and we always walk barefoot on our carpets.

LadyDuck ... I've read someplace -- probably online -- that if you vacuum often (like you do) that you don't need to shampoo carpets as often. Don't know if it's really true, but it seems to me that the "no kids, no animals and walking barefoot on the carpet" would really keep them pretty clean. :)
