I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream

I never did get the ice cream I started to crave after &AbbyG 's announcement that July 19th is National Ice Cream Day! I think that I might remedy that sometime today, with a cone from an ice cream shop. Or, I may just head to the grocery store for a pint of Talenti brand of ice cream (to die for!) I wish there were still the old-fashioned ice cream shops like my mother owned in the 1970s. I worked there for a year or so before joining the Navy. I made sundaes, malts, shakes, banana splits and more. But I still had my favorite ice cream flavors--Mint Chocolate Chip, Rocky Road, and Coffee.

I am currently indulging in Triple Brownie which is chocolate ice cream with brownie bits and chocolate chip shavings mixed in.

Sailorchronos wrote on July 20, 2015, 9:53 AM

There are still old-style ice cream parlours around but they're becoming hard to find. Most likely you'll see them in rural areas.

MegL wrote on July 20, 2015, 10:14 AM

My favourite is Poor Bear, with chunks of honeycomb in it.

inertia4 wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:24 AM

I have always been a chocolate fan. And Rocky Road was always my favorite ice cream. I used to go to Baskin Robins all the time for Rocky Road. They had the best. I miss my ice cream.

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:36 AM

&AbbyG Yay! Abby, that means you win! Meet me for ice cream for our birthday! (I'm not sure your day, so we can split the difference in days!)

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:38 AM

JohnRoberts Take away the brownie bits, and I'd be okay. I like the crunch of hardened chocolate or nuts. Those brownie bits, texture-wise, feel gummy and gloppy to me. But you enjoy!!! emoticon

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:42 AM

Sailorchronos I also like soft-serve, but not like most of the stuff served today. There was a place I used to go to called Shirl's in Waukegan, IL. It was great. It was real ice cream, just like I grew up remembering.

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:42 AM

Until you mentioned that on &Abbyg 's article, I had never heard of it.

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:44 AM

Yes, inertia4 I loved the hardness/crunch of the almonds in the Chocolate. Occasionally, we would get a batch of Chocolate Almond in, which I would opt for instead of the Rocky road with marshmallows.

JohnRoberts wrote on July 20, 2015, 11:53 AM

Soft serve in restaurants has become terrible. So runny and watery most of the time.

PriscillaKing wrote on July 20, 2015, 12:15 PM

I never heard of that one either.

PriscillaKing wrote on July 20, 2015, 12:19 PM

I voted for Black Walnut because in my part of the world that's *always* local, small batch, fresh, and gluten-free.

I also like Rocky Road. And Butterfingers. And vanilla, chocolate, or coffee Toffee Crunch. And Moose Tracks. And peanut. And almond. Also the fruit flavors if they're made with visible chunks of real fruit and not fake fruit flavoring. But I have to be brand-specific with those because some not-so-good dairies do them.

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 12:45 PM

PriscillaKing I think we can say that you just like ice cream! emoticon :winking:

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 12:46 PM

Exactly, JohnRoberts ! That is why I like Shirl's. It was real soft-serve, made with cream. Nummies!

DWDavisRSL wrote on July 20, 2015, 12:54 PM

I had to vote other as I did not see Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough on the list. It was my favorite before it became famous. I used to make Toll House Cookie dough and keep it in the fridge to mix with vanilla ice cream back before Ben even knew Jerry.

xstitcher wrote on July 20, 2015, 1:07 PM

Ah darn it. I voted chocolate before I saw you had Mint Chocolate Chip on there. ;9

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 1:18 PM

Oh, cool! We'll meet at midnight...say..in Kansas City? LOL

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 1:20 PM

DWDavisRSL That does the same thing the brownies bits do for me. Makes it all gummy. Tell you what, I'll eat it and spit the cookie dough out for you (sans the chocochips) and I'll share. emoticon

CoralLevang wrote on July 20, 2015, 1:21 PM

I have to admit, xstitcher , that if I could only choose one, instead of the three I mentioned, it would be the same. I love me some good chocolate mint chip ice cream! Have you had the mint M&Ms ? Dark choc mint. YUM

DWDavisRSL wrote on July 20, 2015, 2:09 PM

Thanks, anyway. I'll just run up to the local ice cream shop about a mile from here and get my own.

PriscillaKing wrote on July 20, 2015, 4:27 PM

Agreed. But the crunchier the better. And no flour, and none of those bizarre chemicals the cheap brands are full of...so I don't often actually get to *eat* ice cream.

MegL wrote on July 20, 2015, 5:44 PM

You can read about it here: http://mauds.co.uk/about.html It began in Northern Ireland, though there may be some on mainland Britain as well, and possibly in Spain.

xstitcher wrote on July 20, 2015, 6:52 PM

Yes, but I think only once. ;p They are hard to find. :( Soooooo yummmy !

Ruby3881 wrote on July 20, 2015, 8:46 PM

I like so many that I just can't choose one! I love flavours that have a bunch of different stuff in them - especially if it involves bits of brownies, cherries, nuts, or some kind of caramel ooze. I love coffee ice cream, but also chocolate and strawberry. I love things like Ben & Jerry's Half Baked or Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch, or Haagen-Dazs Cherry Chocolate Chunk.

CoralLevang wrote on July 21, 2015, 1:19 AM

I still did not take &AbbyG 's temptation from yesterday. But you, dear Ruby3881 are making it equally as difficult . LOL

Paulie wrote on July 21, 2015, 2:45 AM

Chocolatchip and Rocky Road have always been my favorite flavors.

CoralLevang wrote on July 21, 2015, 9:07 AM

A girl was just trying to help...and share. I wouldn't want anything to go to waste here with me. emoticon :winking:

CoralLevang wrote on July 21, 2015, 9:08 AM

Yeppers!! Mmmmmm!

msiduri wrote on July 21, 2015, 9:58 AM

I love some of exotic stuff—rocky road, black cherry walnut, cookie dough, triple fudge, etc., but I always come home to plain chocolate.

DWDavisRSL wrote on July 21, 2015, 12:52 PM

Watching you get the chips out of the cookie dough might be interesting. A little gross, but interesting.

lexiconlover wrote on July 21, 2015, 1:07 PM

There used to be an old Fashioned ice cream parlor in Portland, off of Broadway- man I hadn't thought of that place in years.

CoralLevang wrote on July 22, 2015, 2:15 AM

Yes, I love ice cream, but chocolate seems to be a recurring theme for me in some fashion. emoticon

CoralLevang wrote on July 22, 2015, 2:16 AM

lexiconlover I'll drive down to Portland and pick you up at the airport. Let's go!

Ruby3881 wrote on July 22, 2015, 9:40 PM

I'm not sure if that's a bad thing - or if maybe you'd like an excuse to get some ice cream right now??? emoticon

CoralLevang wrote on July 23, 2015, 12:48 AM

Have you tried Talenti ice cream? I love the flavor . It's great. Not a lot of crunch, that I've seen, but maybe there are flavors I don't know about that have more crunch. But to die for ice cream.

CoralLevang wrote on July 23, 2015, 12:49 AM

I think we are supposed to keep it PG-13 here, so I shall refrain from the description. ROFLMAO

DWDavisRSL wrote on July 23, 2015, 9:14 AM

Shaking my head and laughing so hard I can barely type.

CoralLevang wrote on July 24, 2015, 9:03 AM

&AbbyG It seems that we will have to invite Paulie , who shares a day with you. Instead of KC, it may have to be someone more exotic. emoticon :winking:
