A Photo that Needed Black and White

Sometimes, I come across a photo that I don't really like in color. There is just nothing that really grabs my attention about the shot. That is what happened with this photo that I took at the Reflections Riding and Arboretum Natural Trail.

Do you see what I mean? Nothing really inspiring about the photo at all. It's just too blah for my liking.

I decided to try it in black and white yesterday for the Facebook photography group. Here is how it turned out.

Doesn't it look a lot more interesting now? It has depth and dimension. It definitely draws the attention more in black and white. At least I think it does.

What do y'all think?

I think the black&white pic has more punch...try increasing the contrast in the colour pic and see what that does..

It has often been said that a good 'High Key' black and white photo has more impact. I have always thought that this is true, especially of portraits.
The example you have here shows more 'character' as a b&w photo. Even if there are no characters in it.. :)

Yes, this photo in black and white is more eye-catching than the same photo in color.

It doesn't look at muddy and it looks more retro.

Black and white definitely has a place in any picture portfolio. It take the emphasis off the subject and lets us explore the entire picture.

Oh that definitely works better in black and white! At least in my opinion. You really have a good eye for such things.

I agree. Some shots are much, much more interesting in black and white.

I think I agree with you about this one. The contrast is important. The green in this case takes the eye away form the lines of the bridge..

I do like the black and white version a lot. I can't say the color photo had no interest for me, though.

I might one day but I really don't like the original so I probably won't mess with it.

I believe it does have more punch. I sometimes think I could do only black and white photography, I like it so much.

AngelSharum wrote on August 5, 2014, 2:47 PM

Yeah, black and white does that to a lot of photos I believe.

Thank you. I am learning which photos look best in black and white. At least I feel like I'm learning.

Me neither. I don't like it at all. I'm glad I decided it might look good in black and white cause I love that one.
