It’s Been Too Hot for Man or Beast Today

The cats agree. That’s Garfield, a neighbor cat, sprawled out on our porch during the triple digit heat today.

This is Sarah, taking it easy on the chair she claims as hers unless Garfield beats her to it.

I took the photo.

About ten minutes before I could get the picture, the were posed the way I wanted them. They were lying motionless looking half dead , sleeping, on the porch, a few feet from each other. They both looked zapped by the heat, as I was. Just as I was about to get the camera, my husband came home and they moved to where you see them now.

Sarah is peculiar cat. (OK. What cat isn’t?) When I got here today, she was very thirsty. I normally put water out on the porch to supplement what her owners give her, since she’s here so much. The large bowl sits near the door. When I got here today it was dry. I normally rinse it out with the hose and then refill it. I let the water in the hose cool by running it into a flower bed for the plants. Then I put the bowl by a potted plant and water it before filling the water bowl. Then I return the hose to where it belongs and turn the water off.

Sarah followed me over while I turned on the water and rinsed the bowl. She followed me back to the potted plant and watched me fill the bowl. But thirsty as she was, she didn’t take a drink while I was returning the hose and turning off the water. No. I guess she was just supervising. She finally got a drink when her bowl was back in its proper place beside the door. I’d show her drinking, but then you wouldn’t be able to see her face. And that would be a shame.

I took the photo.

We get to know the intensity of the heat not through barometers but through our pets and animals around us.

Being a supervisor, while someone else works to feed you, and then you rest. That's the life. Right on Sarah.

It was very hot here today too. I had open the windows at sunset to let some of the heat out and then to shut them all again after a while as it was getting cold.

I think I also feel it personally. I know when it's like an oven outside.

I do think cats consider us their wait staff.

Gotta love that evening breeze. I was in Templeton until almost midnight, and as soon as the sun began to go down we started getting the breeze from the coast. That doesn't happen so much in Paso Robles.

I will trade you some heat for my cloudy cool days.

Cats are creatures of habit. And yes, they do like to supervise! Sarah has a very pretty face :)

I'd love some cool, cloudy, days. How do we do this?

BarbRad wrote on August 3, 2014, 7:03 PM

That's why I thought you'd like to see her face instead of having it in the bowl.

It can't be pleasant being wrapped in fur when the weather is hot.

I feel especially bad for those such as Sarah who wear back coats.
