One of the most popular and most beautiful summer flowers is the gladiolus. These flowers come in a countless variety of colours. The accompanying photo shows two varieties from my garden. The pink and white coloured gladiolus is the most common type. Gladiolus flowers are relatively easy to grow. Bulbs are planted in early spring and bloom in July and August. They don't require a lot of special care, just regular watering. They can resist full exposure to the sun. However, they are sensitive to extreme weather such as heavy rain, storms and hail. Due to their size, they are easily damaged by the rain.
These flowers look great in large vases because they are long and the flower is large. Mixing different colours makes for beautiful bright bouquets. In the winter, the bulbs can be stored in a dry place until next spring when they can be replanted. Overall, the gladiolus is easy to care for and rewarding flower to have in the garden.
