The Family Cactus

I really hated to leave this cactus behind when we moved from Richmond Hill, Ontario to Chicago in 2009 when darling hubby was transferred. This particular cactus began as a tiny piece or baby from a cactus that my mom owned. Who gave her "a baby" I will never know, but I brought it home, (yes, we all lived in Canada at the time) and planted it. If I'm not mistaken, it survived 5 moves with us before I had to let it go. It was the best year to date. It actually had 20 blooms when we shot this photo. I have never seem it bloom to this extent and it needs absolutely no babying what so ever. If you remember to water it every once in a while, it is happy.

I did remember to break off a "baby" for my son to take care of until we come home and then I want it back so I can start my new family cactus. When that will be, I have no idea... but I will definitely be trying again.

I never really understood why people liked having Cactus' considering their texture and that they really didn't do much. I guess the convenience of not needing to water it a whole bunch would be appealing. But it's actually quite beautiful!

It is very lovely. It reminds me of a plant we had where we broke off a limb and transplanted it and it bloomed.

When the cactus blooms everything is forgotten about how thorny it is :)

Wow! this certainly is a lovely cactus picture. I have 2 Christmas cactus that were given to me 3 Christmases ago from my daughter, I still have them they only bloom in the winter months for a very short time, the blooms are a love orchid color and one has red blooms. They are a great flowering plant to enjoy in winter.
