Saved by the Bell!

You're not a bad student but there are times when the teacher seems to know you are unprepared for a long quiz. Silently you cross your fingers and pray for an intervention. Then the school bell rings. Saved (literally) by the bell!

You are not a terrible employee but there are times when your boss has PMS and she has no one to vent it out. She wants you to report to her office asap. You silently cross your fingers and pray for a distraction. The receptionist announces the arrival of the CEO from another company. Saved by the bell!

How many times have we been saved by the bell? Countless times in hopeless situations perhaps.

But did you know that long ago, when people had no medical equipment to identify "dead" from just "highly intoxicated", they bury their folks alive? Soon enough, when graves were running out, they started digging out and opening coffins to reuse the lot. Only to discover that "1 out of 25 coffins had scratch marks on the inside." A clear realization of the unfortunate truth. To remedy the problem, they would tie a string on the wrist of the "corpse" and tie it to a bell. Hence the expression "saved by the bell."

Have you ever been saved by the bell?

Lol

ONE IN TWENTY-FIVE??????? Holy cats! I knew about the bell thing, but I thought that was just for people with a family history of catalepsy. Also digging up coffins seems very weird...

I have read that before. I am sure I have been "saved by the bell" but no examples are popping into my mind right now.

That's very interesting about the origin but also a tad bit creepy. I had no idea about that. I've thought about how horrible it would be to be buried alive on accident.

It was interesting to read about the origin of the expression. In the past some people actually got buried alive. What a scary thought.

I cannot imagine the kind of panic that a person feels when he discovers that he is buried alive.

Hence the need for Maxwell's silver hammer. Or a cord. Whichever. Ring the bell. Since they now disembowel people, it happens a lot, lot less!
