Amazon Ads

Hi everyone - we are still working on an AdSense replacement and every ad network we apply to seems either doesn't pay anywhere near what is needed or we are just out right denied. So in the meantime, we have setup an Amazon affiliate account and will begin placing those around the site. For example, the ad in the header is one such advertisement.

All the Amazon ads you see here will only help if you use that ad to purchase an item. So if you plan on making a purchase and want to support the site, then please use one of those links. It isn't much right now but every little bit helps until we can find a stable ad platform to get back to.

Eventually I want to find a way to reward those purchases here. Some number of coins per dollar spent or something like that. The problem is I don't know how to detect things like that, so maybe in time I will be able to find some documentation on it. Another extension of that is for people to request to write reviews about a product, including an affiliate link with that post and giving out so many coins per purchase from that link. Again, I am not sure how to detect that yet but it is something we are considering.

On a side note, unrelated to Amazon I will be trying to work on the backend some more. I have put in many applications to ad networks, with about a 10% success rate. It seems Google has blacklisted us until they get around to reviewing whatever it is they do. So I am going to try to put a little more time into the code in the backend and work on some of those feature enhancements that are so far behind schedule.

As always, I thank those who have supported us so far and can understand why we had to make the decisions we did.

I hope you can get it all sorted. I know Amazon does targeted ads based on the content of the page, those really might help get people to click and buy. I use some of them on my own site.
I'm still sticking around, and I hope that you can get things worked out and back into a profitable state.

Shoot, I'll be glad to always do my Amazon ordering through here so the site gets the credit, and I don't care if there is any "coin back". I only order online from two sites: Amazon and DisneyStore.com and I only order from Disney store 2x's per year but I frequently place Amazon orders all year long (going to be doing one in a couple of days as a matter of fact).

I can't believe how much authority Google seems to have, I personally don't like them at all. I NEVER search via google and honestly finding out that they can do this without any reason given does not improve my opinion of them one bit.

Thanks for letting us know. I have something to buy at Amazon, I will use the link.

It's really not fair that such an entity can have such a monopoly and control. I always do my SEO to please any search engine.

fellow members need to use caution and descretion. Too many from one area will trigger yet another of those dreaded flags.

Good luck. I am sure you will find a solution with all the hard work you are putting into this!

Do you know if amazon links in our posts would be counted towards your affiliate account? I post traditionally album links in my weekly playlist posts, and while I like to use bandcamp and cdbaby as well, I usually wind up with a lot of amazin links on those posts. I also used to do links embedded in photos of the book covers, when I was writing book reviews on my own blog. I hate dealing with the hassle of image rights anyway, so I haven't been using book cover images since I started writing reviews on these sorts of sites, but maybe a text link to the book's amazon page might contribute a bit to the site's amazon affiliate stats too. I have no idea, but it seems like something worth finding out.

Thank you for the support :D

I wouldn't really call these ads... they are more like affiliate banners. Even if 10 million people looked at them we don't get a cent. But if someone clicks on them and purchases something, we should get a small percentage of that order. Its not reliable income but its something until we can find something better ( and the ad networks thus far have been less than stellar ). I am still considering the crowdfunding for server costs also... something I will try to remember to look into tomorrow.

That would be awesome :) let me know if you do... I would be interested to see how this whole thing works and how I can pick up on things like that. Swagbucks does it so it must be possible :)

ashley wrote on June 15, 2014, 11:03 PM

Thank you very much - let me know when you do and I'll check on our end to see if it goes through. Still testing this out :)

ashley wrote on June 15, 2014, 11:05 PM

What do you mean "too many from one area" ? Are you talking about site visitors from AdSense? I hope not Amazon... I don't think they will mind :)

ashley wrote on June 15, 2014, 11:05 PM

I certainly hope so, but thank you for the support :)

ashley wrote on June 15, 2014, 11:08 PM

That's ok - just staying as a member of the site is more than enough. Thank you :)

ashley wrote on June 15, 2014, 11:16 PM

I think so, so long as it would contain our code. The issue is how do I get those in the posts? I would probably append something to the post but I'm not sure how that would work dynamically. Unless someone requested an "official" persona paper link for their post..

Not sure, but something to look into. I welcome any ideas :)

Ravenmount wrote on June 15, 2014, 11:40 PM

Well, let us know as soon as you know, because I already have links to products on amazon in several of my posts, and quite a few in my last 20-song playlist post, and if there is a way to make the links work with the affiliate system those links all could maybe contribute to the cause.

Ruby3881 wrote on June 16, 2014, 12:05 AM

Could you keep up with requests if a lot of folks were needing the official links for different purposes? If so, maybe people who are getting ready to write a product review could give you a heads up a day or two ahead so you can send them the code. Similarly, people doing posts about TV shows, music, etc. could let you know the links they need.

I'm wondering though, maybe people just need the affiliate number in order to build the Amazon module and add it to their posts? Or maybe you can get some sort of thing set up that people can build the module directly here on-site?

haha you're in luck ashley .. im waiting on my bubblews redemption to come through to buy a phone on amazon .. :D

MaeLou wrote on June 16, 2014, 10:40 AM

I really hope that Google Adsense comes through in the end, but I think having Amazon here even after you find an ad network worth keeping would be a good idea. A lot of people shop through Amazon and if you have some sort of incentive for them to buy by clicking through here, I think that could help both them and the site.

nbaquero wrote on June 16, 2014, 12:21 PM

Ashley thanks for your efforts, I know you are trying to do the best for the site, and that is the kind of attitude that makes me feel glad I joined. I will stay as long as needed, As you might know right now I am unable to post anything, but I still visit the posts of my connections.

ashley wrote on June 16, 2014, 2:08 PM

That is a good question, and my only hesitation to rolling it out now. Now probably wouldn't be too bad but I don't want to hold up people from posting reviews on items when they are waiting for me to get an affiliate link to them.

That's not a bad idea just would need to figure out how to do that. I think I would also need to figure out some sort of incentive to do that... maybe X number of bonus coins for including the link, Y number for a sale from that link ( if I can figure out how to detect that stuff ).

Of course I say this when I am still WAY behind on referral bonuses :S

ashley wrote on June 16, 2014, 2:10 PM

Well, in the meantime you can go ahead and contact us and request an affiliate link... not sure what the coin compensation would be yet but I can certainly keep track of them. I think the idea that Ruby3881 had would be ideal... some sort of "Amazon Affiliate Link Generator" but I would need to research that to figure out how to do it.

ashley wrote on June 16, 2014, 2:11 PM

Awesome, if you decide to write a review here let me know and I'll get you a link :)

ashley wrote on June 16, 2014, 2:19 PM

I am willing to try anything at this point so I do thank you for the prayers.

That is possible... it makes me nervous because the revenue is very unsteady for the model we have. If we went in that direction, I think it would have to change to you earn a percentage of the commission we would get from Amazon instead of getting coins for views, likes, comments. Which may not be a bad idea... I was talking last night with someone about adding a significant new (but similar) portion to our site with a similar model. More on that later, but a "reviews" section wouldn't be bad.

But more on that later... the problem with programmers is we have the attention span of a cat :)

ashley wrote on June 16, 2014, 2:21 PM

Thats true... we just need to figure out a way to keep track of it. I wouldn't have a problem with giving out a percentage of our commission based on what the writer earns. How much and how that would work is still to be determined at this point though. Something to keep in mind.

ashley wrote on June 16, 2014, 2:21 PM

I thank you for the support and I am sorry you are having issues getting your emails. I just commented on your profile on what you can do to get around the email confirmation.

Thank you for working so hard for us, Ashley.

Me too. Been there with Google Adsense problems myself. One issue might be that this is a new site, so fingers crossed and things will be back on track soon.
