Bugs - Getting rid of 'em

Do you remember when you'd hear your neighbor had bought some pest traps they put up in their yard?

Often, they employed a sexual attractant, a chemical called a pheromone. The theory was that whatever bugs were in your yard would be drawn into the trap, and the pests would be gone! A lovely theory that one, right? The promise was so great and the price was low...

Well, it sounded good, but the idea is so wrong! Pheromone can be detected by many pests even miles away. Every bug in creation practically was being invited to come to their yard! True, many turned up dead in the traps, but 10 times that many are in that back yard. It would have been much better to buy a repellent.

Yes, there was a lot in the news about these at one time but you hardly ever hear about them now. They even experimented with human pheromones I believe: spraying them on cinema seats to see whether people were more attracted to certain seats.

Rather stupid to do that. For a number of reasons. People of all genders already attend cinemas. People have an extremely weak sense of smell. It doesn't make any difference which seat they would sit in, as the income of the theaters remains the same, even if they stand on their heads. But then, people are sometimes known to be less intelligent than a stone.

Now that is very true! I don't think it was to attract customers to the theatre but rather to see whether pheromones worked in humans even if they didn't appear to be able to smell them!
