TV and Movie Phoney Music Playing Scenes Drive Me Crazy!

You've seen them. Scenes in movies and TV shows in which a musical instrument is being played: perhaps a piano, maybe a saxophone, or even a guitar.

What's wrong with that? Well producers and/or directors seem to think it's easier to train an actor to "play" a musical instrument than it is to train a musician to act.

So?

So watching a piano player move up and down the keyboard, with his hands remaining centrally located on the keyboard, or a saxophone player whose fingers fail to move while his cheeks remain puffed out all the time, drive me crazy! Not to mention guitarists who strum their guitar without moving the fingers of their non-dominant hand.

Care to see an example? Watch this episode of Ironside -- you know -- the detective show?

Yes, I've seen scenes like that and it looks so ridiculous as if we can't see that the actor doesn't know how to play that instrument and would be more real to watch a person play an air guitar. :)

I used to find it amusing to try and guess or see whether the actor really was playing the instrument. Years ago, many actors were also musicians of one kind or another, I think.
