What Is Needed in Old Age?

We're conceived, born, and raised. Then we leave the nest, mature, grow old, and inevitably die.

In song, the times of our lives have been likened to seasons, months of the year.

There is a quality that is needed to face those autumn years. The one song, the very best rendering of which was sung by an unlikely singer, Walter Huston, is "September Song."

Please listen to it, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkWn4--RmEk

Have you guessed that the quality oldsters need is that of courage? Courage is not the fool hardy, devil-may-care attitude frequently displayed in cinema.

It is a quality it is good to be equipped with if one is to face the end of life with determination.

Afterword:

Although maybe it doesn't quite seem to fit, I was so touched by this presentation I had to include it to include the quality of resignation.

Perhaps one unfortunate consequence of playing songs such as these is that some who tend toward depression may dwell on the negative side of them, becoming even more depressed. Courage and resignation are important qualities. But hope transcends them. My hope is in the Kingdom of God, as described in the Bible.

That is also my hope. :)

Courage is a very important quality throughout life. It is needed for different situations at different times. Sometimes it takes courage just to keep going.

I honor both my parents for being so brave in their final days. They knew they were dying and there time was coming closer but in spite of it, both of them continued to face each day with hope and joy for the life God has given them. My father told me he wanted to do right by God, so he could join my mother in eternity. He was as brave a man as anyone I have known or have known about and was rock solid with his reason and he influenced me in a way only a father could his son.

Those are great memories to have of your parents.

I have those memories to keep me from forgetting. I hope I don't ever forget. As long as they live in my memories, they live in my heart and mind and soul, so to speak. :)

Interesting you qualified the last statement, Anthony. Could it be you realize the soul is not an ethereal inner being but is merely the entire person, as in the expression, "That poor old soul," meaning merely that poor suffering person? If so, where did you learn that? It is not taught in churches...

It is the way I feel.

And, you are correct.
