It's probably psychological

WHY IS IT that your favourite beverage always tastes better when drunk from your favourite mug?

I'm betting that just about all of you have a favourite cup or mug for your favourite brew; you know what I mean - that mug (or china cup if you happen to be posh!) which is always the one you reach for when having a hot drink - and woe betide anyone else who uses it!

I have one mug which I use for everything hot - tea, coffee and the odd hot chocolate. Strangely, f I want a cold drink of water or milk or a coke then I will use a glass and it doesn't matter which one. It seems that the choice of mug only matters when it's a hot drink.

This, of course, only applies when we are at home. If we eat out or visit friends then it doesn't seem to matter what the cup or mug is we enjoy it anyway. Maybe it's something to do with the comfort of the familiar.

When we are in our own familiar environment at home then we want familiar routines and things around us so we stick to the same cup or mug possibly out of a subconscious need to feel secure in our own little world.

Strange beings, people, eh?

I need to drink the right things out of the right glasses - I think its from when I worked in the pub, at least I don't remember thinking about it much before then. The lager goes in a lager glass, the heavy in the old fashioned tulip glasses, wine in wine glasses, shorts in short ones etc etc. I cant drink wine from anything other than a wine glass, in fact I went out and bought a wine glass the night we moved because we had not brought the box containing them with us on that first day and I couldn't drink my wine out of the perfectly good straight glasses we had with us - those are for juice - and the supermarket is closer than the old house was to go back for them. Mugs, I am not as fussy with but then thats probably because I have loads that I love, I have a bunny one I bought to use as my work mug when I worked in a ward where we had time to drink coffee and space to store our own mugs, then a nicer bunny mug that my colleagues from that job got me when I left there. I have a Harry Potter collection, one of which changes colour with the hot water! oh and my current mug was also a gift and says 'always be awesome' on it

I have a favorite coffee mug, to be sure. I also have a favorite style wine glass. I know how much wine precisely to pour out for maximum enjoyment, while not overstepping my proper bounds. But as to quirky, I have this crazy night routine before retiring for the night.

I have two favourite mugs for coffee but tea can be drunk from any mug. Water, I drink from a glass but if a clean cup is handier, I will drink it from that. You are right. We are very funny beings!

I cannot drink tea out of my coffee mug. I have to use a different mug for tea but as long as it isn't the coffee mug, any mug will do for tea. I can drink coffee out of other mugs, but it's best when in my coffee mug and that mug is only used for coffee. Yes, an awful lot of rules for beverages.

Not strange actually. I can relate. But they tell me I have OCD with ADD so who cares? I broke my fancy 16 oz Starbucks mug, made of porcelain. It was the only cup I needed to drink from for coffee, tea or cocoa. All hot. When the mug fell as I reached for a notebook it ruined my daily pattern. I have of course several favorite cups or rather, mugs. But it was a familiar one that I favored. It will never be replaced. I actually went looking for another just like it. It seems impossible to find it. Oh well, I will have to adjust. Silly me.

When we break our favourite mug it can be a bit traumatic. When that happens to me it can take several days before I settle on a new favourite mug!
