There is one woollen wood in the whole of Ireland and it's in Whitehead on the east coast of County Antrim. A woollen wood is a wood in which knitted or crocheted woollen goods are displayed for people to walk around and look at. This year the theme is Alice in Wonderland. We have a local shop that sells yarn and wool and there are a number of knitting / crocheting groups in the town. Anyone can go along and learn how to knit or crochet flowers or make more ambitious items for display in the wood. This year's woollen wood is on Saturday 16th June 2018 .
The wood where it is held is called the Jubilee Wood, a recently planted wood, built on the site of an old airfield used during the World wars. You can walk around it at present and see the remnants of previous woollen entries, including large spider webs and spiders which would be horrific if they were real!
On Saturday, 4th August 2018 , Lighthouse Yarns is holding the Yarnfolk wool fest with classes and demonstration of all types of yarn and wool creations. That will be part of the annual festival in the town, so there will be plenty to see and do, whether you are interested in yarn and wool or not at all.
