Preparing For My Viva

Viva in Less Than 2 weeks Time

I submitted my thesis (over 500 pages of it) at the end of October 2015, hoping to get a date for my Viva before Christmas. Well, that didn't happen, possibly just as well. emoticon

I Need to Prepare

A viva is an interview. There will be an external examiner (a lecturer from a different university) an internal examiner (a lecturer from my own university) and a chairman from my own university. One or both of my supervisors may also be present if they choose.

What Has To Be Done?

I need to know my thesis back to front but I was never one for learning things off by rote! So I have to prepare a different way. I am creating a workbook with questions in it that I have to answer. That worked well for me previously.

I wrote a Hub

While I was researching the questions for my workbook, I wrote the process down and made it into a hub. It's a long hub but i f you want to see it, you can . It's undergoing moderation for the next 24 hours, so won't have any adverts on it.

RoadMonkey

By the way, the first hubs written on my PhD were in Squidoo and when that folded, they were transferred to HubPages but you had to choose a different username, so I used my Squidoo name of RoadMonkey, just in case you wonder why it's not Dreamermeg, which is my other username on HubPages.

That was quite fascinating and liked the Hubpage. I shall study it again as I want to write a Hubpage

Glad you liked it. I wrote the original in Word and then just copied and pasted

That's the way I do most of these things

Good luck with your Viva. Getting into the 'student' mode keeps one young and hopeful. I read your hub.

Thank you very much. emoticon

Wow, 500 pages is quite an accomplishment! I've never done so much on one project. Good luck to you!

so.... make us your audience for the rough drafts of your presentation... Do the monkey see, monkey doo again... pop some of your possible questions you could be asked, and what would your answer be... it was a thesis... what were the main points? ;)

That's a very kind offer, however, the thesis has to remain unpublished until after my viva! My supervisor has just emailed me today, offering a meeting tomorrow or next week. I have chosen tomorrow, as it gives me more time to make any necessary changes.

I once had to expound on a topic in grad school (actually, I participated under the Citizen Scholar program). I was sick as a dog, adding to my burden.

MegL wrote on January 16, 2016, 1:07 PM

I certainly hope I will not end up sick!

VinceSummers wrote on January 16, 2016, 1:12 PM

I hope not. Interestingly, my topic was in organic chemistry. Once we were asked to create (on paper) a compound no one had as yet successfully synthesized. Not just that, but THREE WAYS. I did. One was super simple, but every step in the synthesis was capable of violent explosion. Still my professor scrutinized it greatly. My feeling was this was not a mere exam, but an effort on his part to come up with a successful synthesis (doubtless for his credit) for that very compound.

Well that sounds fascinating and best of wishes on your success. Your on your way! Very exciting!

Wow that is so cool knowing that you are doing something great and has a great future effect. I hope I can get a scholarship this coming school year for my Masters Degree in creative writing.. I just hope and pray for it. The tuition fee is too expensive.

MegL wrote on January 17, 2016, 10:33 AM

Yes, fees are very expensive. I hope you get your scholarship.
