Sometimes I Just Have to Unplug

I'm one of those people who find themselves highly sensitive to external stimuli -- maybe you are, too. The everyday sights and sounds that some people may not notice in the course of the day are often overwhelming to me. I become anxious, develop headaches and begin to feel as if I must escape to a cave.

It turns out my nervous system, like that of approximately 20 percent of the population, is wired a bit differently, and I am termed to be a highly sensitive person. It's been a relief to find out that there's a name for what I experience and that I am far from alone in my experiences.

When I feel overwhelmed, I find that if I "unplug" for a time, I'll be good as new. This is when I turn off the ringer on my cell phone, close my laptop and sit in a quiet spot. Oftentimes I read a book, at other times I just observe my surroundings, clearing my mind of anxious thoughts.

Certainly one doesn't have to be a highly sensitive person to become overwhelmed with the speed of life. Bombardment from electronic devices, home, work and just living in our super-speed society can become simply too much to cope with at times. How do you unwind when you find yourself feeling overwhelmed?

Curl up with a puppy or hug George, but I am fairly calm most of the time

I don't experience this, yet I must have my quiet time.

Feisty56 - Life can be difficult at times. When I feel overwhelmed I do the same as you. I ignore the rest of the world by unplugging in every way possible. I feel I owe that much to myself. Sometimes I take a good book to a nearby park and sit on a park bench and read while listening to the sounds of nature.

I read that electronic devices, like TV and computer screens, have lightwaves that mess with a person nerves. Someone who is already sensitive, does need to unpluge more often. Truth be told, a lot of us need to unplug a little more than we do. But, I'd better be careful saying that, people might hate me!

I don't consider myself to be a highly sensitive person, but I do sometimes find the constant onslaught of electronics in the form of screens, ringing, beeping, advertising, etc., to be overwhelming sometimes. The advertising is the one thing that tends to annoy me the most...it's like I can't even escape those who want to sell me something in the most private corners of my own home.

I firmly believe in switching off all the electrical stuff for a couple of hours and like to go a day without turning on the computer

I think we all have moments like this I know I do and I like to draw.

Hmmm.... You have me thinking now.

Sometimes, I want to stop the world so I can get off at the next station.

I will unwind by listening to some soft music and reading my favorite book.

I understand your need to unplug! I do that by taking a long walk with my dog, letting him lead the way and paying attention to the beauty we find along our way.
