I Do Love a Sharp Pencil

The majority of my writing, which in first draft happens away from the computer, is done with pencil on paper. I love the way a pencil flows across the page, as if writing itself. This gentle movement, from left to right, back to the start and moving across the page again, seems to allow thoughts and ideas to flow more easily from my brain. I can achieve a large word count in quite a short time this way. I also find that, when I do transfer those pencil written words to paper, they need less editing than the times I write straight on to the computer. However, my pencils must be excessively sharp, as is the one in the picture above. I own many pencils and at least three pencil sharpeners. Sometimes I will sharpen a pencil several times in a writing session, to ensure its sharpness. I seem to remember, as a child, my teachers always insisting on sharp pencils. And yes, in my own teaching days, students soon leaned they needed to sharpen their pencil regularly. I'm off to the library for one of my regular research sessions this morning, so it's time to go and sharpen a few pencils.

Yes, a sharp pencil is a thing of joy for writing. I now create all my work on the computer but I still like my sharp pencils! I carry one and a sharpener in my bum bag (fanny pack) in case I need to write anything when out and about.

It was late, I was tired, I'd had a long, hard day so maybe I could be excused for trying to sharpen a pen! (didn't work) emoticon

Kasman pens are nowhere near as responsive, are they!

MegL there are occasions I can't find a pen in my bag when it's needed, but I can always find a pencil.

Pencil? I have never heard of it or may be I have forgotten that i owned one.(lol) The only time I used it was when I was working on garden designs. Amazing that you use it to write your articles.

bestwriter , no, not my articles, but my real life writing. My posts here and other places don't get as much attention from me and are written straight onto the computer.

I don't get you. What real life writing? (lol)

I love pencils more than pens. And like you I do love using the sharp ones so I always have my sharpener on the side when I am writing

I never worried about my pencil as long as I had enough out to write. I just jump on here and start typing

Oh, I completely agree with you. I love writing with pencils and they have to be sharp too. I always tell my children to keep a sharpened pencil in their hand while srudying and make notes as they go along as this really helps in memorizing details.

Dawnwriter a blunt pencil is so discouraging. Good on you for encouraging your kids like that.

I like to write outlines with a propelling pencil, don't have to keep sharpening it.

I do most writing directly on to the computer.I do like writing in notepads but I always use pens.Only time I use or sharpen pencils is when my grandson is here.
