When Advertisers Become Instrusive

I won't mention the advertiser by name because it may not be them, it may be whatever service they've contracted with to promulgate their ads, but I am getting down right annoyed at how their pop out ads keep covering up half of the post I am trying to read.

It has been happening about every third of fourth post and there is no place on the ad to click to make it go back into the margin where it belongs. I wind up having to read the post around the ad, and that isn't right.

I know ads are the lifeblood of a site like this, but ads of this nature, if they begin to occur too often, do nothing to enhance the site and may convince people to stay away.

If they must use this type of ad, the least the company that places them should do is include an easily identified place to click to move it out of the way of the post.

Rant over.

I get the one telling me 'You have won an iPhone. Click tu [sic] claim.' No delete button, so I have to close the window and start again. I've also had the fake Flash exploits and 'website categorised as a threat' popups too. Need to send the screenshots of the latest version of those to Will, I think.

On another site there is a pop up banner that rises from the bottom of the page, and the close x is well off to the right hand side and greyed out so it's transparent. Pain in the posterior, that. I can understand ads like that on a clickbait site but this isn't one of those sites.

wolfgirl569 wrote on September 6, 2015, 12:16 PM

I only get that when it decides that my plug in is not there. I have one showing that as I write this comment. It did have a x that does nothing when clicked. This does not bother me much tho.

lexiconlover wrote on September 6, 2015, 12:20 PM

I still haven't encountered those.

DWDavisRSL How annoying! I haven't seen any pop up ads on this site. They certainly should have an 'X' so they can be closed!

Oops! Half an hour later - I just got a Kohl's ad that blocked a post!

It also happens when I read a news item on AOL. They need to rethink their psychology about consumers. When I get "assaulted" with ad popups interfering with what I'm trying to see or read, it angers me to no end, to the point that I will purposely NOT buy their products.

CoralLevang wrote on September 6, 2015, 1:58 PM

This happens to me on my cell phone. But not on my laptop. CalmGemini and others are experiencing this, as well.
Has anyone notified elitecodex or maelou of this?

I have experienced this on other sites, however. It seems to be the direction of technology. ?

I don't have any issues on here but a review site I use keeps giving me pop ups that kind of spring open when my mouse goes anywhere near it - very irritating at times

markgraham wrote on September 6, 2015, 2:08 PM

I know what you mean. It happened to me when I was reading your post just now.

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 6, 2015, 2:17 PM

As long as I can close the add, or send it back to the margin where it belongs, I don't mind. But these won't go away unless I close the window.

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 6, 2015, 2:36 PM

I dropped them an e-mail via the contact button and let them know what was happening and which vendor it was.

CoralLevang wrote on September 6, 2015, 2:40 PM

The more information they get, i.e. vendor, process, etc., is helpful. Unfortunately, they may not have an immediate solution. I hope it's solved sooner than later for all concerned.

I thank you for tagging me CoralLevang .

Oh no!! You too? Then it is not country specific as some had raised doubts when I had posted a similar post. I know what it is to have such Ads

CalmGemini So you and I are not the only ones but this post is spared from all what I got to hear on my post, thankfully. emoticon

DWDavisRSL I have interacted with 'contact' several times on this but they seem to have not received those emails. I hope atleast your messages will be received by them and something is done as soon as possible.

bestwriter wrote on September 6, 2015, 9:43 PM

lexiconlover I am sure you will now change your thinking that I am not the only one having this issue?

I just wrote a 10 sentence comment and it disappeared.I am writing again. When this full page ad started to appear almost thee months ago,I had sent many mails to contact which went unanswered. So I stopped writing the mails The problem was more frequent and obstructive. Then bestwriter put up a post on which I commented. There was a suggestion that it was country specific by some as both bestwriter and myself were from India. But many came out with some harsh comments about negativity. We were only voicing our concerns.Bestwriter has always been very active and suggesting ways to improve interaction here.I myself have interacted with members here, though i do not post that much.
Many people did not even want to know what our problems were. Some advised us not to ' complain.''Any way I do hope your problem does not escalate like mine.It starts slowly and before you know you have a duel on your hands.Hope your problem gets resolved, DWDavisRSL .

I have been here since June 2014 and as you have rightly mentioned I have been quite proactive and tried my best to enthuse members here. With well over 1200 posts what more can I do here? And yet I was put in a slot saying that I was against Persona by those who hardly know about my contribution. They have their own reasons to pull me down but Persona Admin knows my contribution and that's all that matters to me.

Rufuszen wrote on September 7, 2015, 6:53 AM

You'd think they would realise that those kind of ads are making them unpopular and no one will read them

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 7, 2015, 10:07 AM

I know that had to be aggravating as my posts are so engaging and scintillating, not to mention humble and down home, that you don't want anything to interfere with your enjoyment of them.

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 7, 2015, 10:09 AM

The problem does not appear to be country specific. I suspect it is tied to one particular ad placement service who bends the rules as long as they can until the site admins drop the hammer on them.

DWDavisRSL wrote on September 7, 2015, 10:12 AM

I don't feel that pointing out an ongoing problem with an ad placement agency who is flaunting appropriate behavior is being negative. I don't even mind pop-up ads as long at there is a clear and easy way to minimize them when they are blocking content. It is interesting that I've not seen any such since first bringing it up in my post.

Interruptions even small ones can affect understanding.

Paulie wrote on September 8, 2015, 4:28 AM

What you and others have been saying about the problems of ads on PP is really shocking and troublesome. I imagine it is only a matter of time before I am affected.

VinceSummers wrote on November 5, 2015, 8:14 AM

They're worse, now! The other day, more than 1 out of 2 for me.

DWDavisRSL wrote on November 5, 2015, 4:54 PM

I know what you mean. It has gotten to the point that as soon as the first one shows up, I call it a day and leave the site.
