The Story Behind the Pink Hope Earrings

The wearing of awareness ribbons and wristbands seems to have become quite fashionable in today's world. I have worn my share of them, and of the sloganed tee-shirts to promote awareness of causes and events to promote them.

I first introduced (here at Persona Paper) the pictured earrings in My Jewelry-making Hobby Could Be Business . I called these "Pink Hope Earrings." I also shared the photographs of several other pairs of earrings I have made.

When it comes to awareness items, I prefer wearing and making things that give a much more subtle message, but which call attention as a conversation starter. In this case, they represent pink of the breast cancer ribbon, and the hope for a cure for breast cancer.

In September last year, I had dinner with friends from California. They were here in the Pacific Northwest for the Seattle event of the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Brij was walking it and Brian ran their business (button-pin sales with clever sayings) for the event. That is how I met them years ago, when I was walking several events. I was glad that they could meet me for dinner before leaving the area.

I wanted to make something special for Brij, so these were made especially for her. I included this note to her:

"I made these with you in mind-- Precious , as in the metal used--sterling silver. Beautiful , just as the pearls are natural beauty, and Unique , in the unique ways in which they grow, as our experience and journey is unique to us and helps us to grow. Sparkling and Multifaceted --Just as the variety of Swarovski crystals, you have many facets to your personality and you can look at others from multiple perspectives and understand their many facets. Your personality shines through, no matter where we find you. You have added beauty and sparkle to my life like no other and I love you."

It is in making things with specific people in mind that gives me my greatest joy. I am so glad that she loved them.

What a wonderful gift. "Straight from the heart to the earlobe" is a lot less elegant in execution than it was when I first thought about it....

AliCanary I do have an Etsy shop, but have not done anything with it. It's called CocoGypsyBeads. Thank you so much for your kind compliment.
