Creativity and Play Using Art Class This Past Week (with photos)

I did not grow up being allowed much room for creativity. I was told things, such as:

  • "Color within the lines."
  • "That's too messy."
  • "That doesn't look like anything. What is it supposed to be?"

I did not get this only from my family, but from teachers.

And so, I became the "smart" one, but I was never smart enough either. I was a daydreamer. I was given more messages:

  • "You're so smart, but don't use it."
  • "She is bright, but argues too much."
  • "If she would only talk less, and work more, she would get along better."

I appreciate that family, school, the times, and society had a different version of what was "right" or "wrong," what children "should" be, and I simply did not fit.

In fact, I don't think that I have ever really fit in life, but have learned to survive, not without consequence. But those tales will be left unwritten (for now).

I have been exploring off-and-on with a Creative Coach, who uses arts and crafts as a way toward healing and acceptance of this person (and kid) that I am. I have taken several classes with her. Some have been downright painful for me. It is not easy for me to let go and be a kid.

Friday night, I went to a Creative Circle of Women meetup that she will be hosting once a month. There were 10 of us from all walks of life, and I loved meeting all these women, most of whom were about 50 years of age. We talked, and cut out pictures and shapes, used glue and paint, and simply created without thinking.

And so, I submit to you the card that I made (front and back) that came from that session. I have no clue what it "means" or "why." There is no logic behind it. It simply is what it is.

Love that card, it looks bright and happy, intertwining hearts with music = I love music! Do you get dancing and singing too?

The creative circle sounds interesting. I would like to participate in something like that. I like the card that you created.
