It’s a bit here in the UK today.

An ideal time, my local emporium believes, to switch off the chill cabinets and move everything out of sight into the warehouse. So there Mr C and I were, heading into the store in search of for supper, only to find that it looked more like something out of Communist era eastern Europe.

Racks and racks of without anything on them. No pies, no pasties, no coleslaw, no cottage cheese, no fresh salad, no ready meals.

We already have ham, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, cheese and mayo here at home.

So instead of walking out of the place in disgust I started to think and so we now have:

  • New potatoes
  • Beetroot
  • Egg mayo deli spread
  • Chicken and bacon deli spread
  • Cheese and onion deli spread

to go with our existing supplies. Tomorrow I can make some salad and coronation salad once the chicken has defrosted and buy some green salad from the store at work before we leave in the evening. I might even be able to use the last two in the salad mix as well. We certainly shouldn’t starve, at least.

My rice salad is always popular and I have a few ideas on what to put into it already:

  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Sweetcorn
  • Diced peppers
  • Avocado
  • Garlic and herb cheese

That’ll keep me and Mr C going during this heat, for sure. Most of these are items we have in the fridge anyway, what we don’t have can be purchased cheaply from the store, assuming they still have some items left on the shelves tomorrow, that is...

You have a way of making me hungry and giving me recipes ideas. I'm originally from South Florida and currently living in the Texas state capitol; both places known for their warm weather. You must understand that from a child – saw a travel commercial on TV for British Airways - got the impression that England was always cold, foggy and rainy; and that only on rare occasions would the sun ever smile on your land and even then it was just for a few hours a day. To hear you talk about “heat” I'm laughing AT MYSELF because I'm thinking to myself: 'The weather is actually hot?? In England??' It's so hard for me to imagine a “tropical heat wave”. :)

Girlfriend! It's been 33*C here today, that's 91*F. Hottest day on record in the UK - temperature was recorded at 36.1*C/96*F earlier at Heathrow Airport in London. I am a puddle of sweat as my office is really cool but now I'm home again. Where it is not cool, especially not with a laptop on my knees!

We're going to use some of the filler as part of our salad for tonight - seeing as the store had nothing else to offer in that line. I have already submitted my formal complaint to the company. I'm so glad I don't work there any more - I would have been ashamed today.

I love the idea of adding cheese to the rice salad! I'll have to try that sometime...

Kudos to you for making the best of an unexpected situation.

Soft cheese makes a lovely rice salad binder and some of it is lower calorie than mayo. I'm eating the rest of the salad and the rest of the coronation chicken and rice as I type.

My colleague's friend told him that the failure was due to the main chiller control unit overheating. Said main chiller control unit is...on the roof!

Your titles do crack me up! I did some volunteer work today and was paid in vegetables (specifically tomatoes and cukes), so it's salad for me, as well!

Om nom nom. Sounds good to me. I finished my cuke in my last smoothie but I still have apricots, satsumas, avocadoes and an apple for the next one.

I just had a tomato, cucumber and cheese sandwich for lunch. And now, the burping.
