Egg Prices

Egg prices are rising weekly, it seems, here. While at the grocery store a few days ago, I picked up a dozen eggs because our chickens have not been laying well this summer. I did not notice the price of them until I got home and was checking my receipt. $3.18 a dozen!

Now, I bought some at Easter and they were around $2 a dozen, which I thought was rather expensive. The price now is utterly ridiculous! Consumers need to be aware of these price increases and why we are being charged so much.

I know the egg price increase is being blamed on the bird flu that seems to be a problem in the chicken flocks at the moment. I know that my daughter is not able to show poultry this year due to the flu. Our state board of health has stopped all poultry being at the fair, swap meets, and flea markets. It is sad but part of being a farmer.

What are egg prices near you? Has the bird flu affected your prices?

We buy eggs in half dozen packs at £1, which is $1.58 Even that is not really an economic price for the producer, so we are paying $3.16 for a dozen. We can get them a bit cheaper but the dearer ones are free range eggs and large size, whereas the others are smaller. I eat a LOT of eggs, if you look at them as a source of protein and good fats, they are really good value for cheap eating.

The egg price in my country is about S$2 per carton of 10 eggs. Most are imported from neighboring countries.

I haven't noticed egg prices going up yet. I know my husband won't do without them!

I thought eggs were expensive in my area but I have changed my mind after reading your post. Eggs are available in Islamabad at $1.2 or Rs. 120 per dozen at the moment.

Prices here have taken a jump. Last Friday I was going to pick up another dozen or two. The previous weekend they were $1.98 (US) a dozen for Grade A large. This last weekend they were around $2.40 a dozen. I looked at the price of 5 dozen pack of medium eggs and where they had been around $7.00, they are now over $10!!!! And I was shopping at the grocery store with the lowest prices in town.

Yes, the prices have doubled. A pack of 18 now is over 4 dollars where I live. We eat a lot of eggs. It really did shock me , how it doubled.
