Secret Anti-Ageing Skin Care Recipe
Here is an unusual 'secret' recipe for anti-ageing skin care that I ran into in my travels over the internet. It's from Ninon de l'Enclos, a famous French courtesan from the middle 1600s. She was reputedly to remain quite wrinkle free well into her old age! Please also see the link to Ninon's memoirs at Project Gutenberg as apparently she gives it here (admittedly, I haven't read this whole memoir).
1 oz spermaceti (sperm whale wax) This is no longer available, so jojoba oil or coconut oil?
3 oz lard (doesn't specify which animal; am assuming pig lard?)
4 oz almond oil
1 tbsp house wax (unclear, but a good modern equivalent might be bees wax)
1 oz onion juice (effectively bleaches skin)
1 oz rose water (you can purchase this but nice to make a DIY rose hydrosol)
Slowly warm all the ingredients together. To make them blend better, one could add some lecithin. Apply over face, neck and hands at night before going to bed. Use a pillow cover to prevent staining.
As some of the ingredients are not available any longer, and some of them are a little unclear, there is a question of whether the modern version would work as well. Rose products have long been used for anti-ageing skin care, and almond oil is also well known in skin care products. The only way to know is to try make a batch!
