Introduction for HawgWyld

I am an attorney and executive officer for a Realtors association in central Arkansas. I am a native Arkansan and am fortunate to have built a life for my wife, children and me in my hometown and will likely remain here through the rest of my days. As for hobbies, I have little time for such things as I am essentially working two jobs (i.e., practicing law and running a Realtors association). Still, my background is in journalism so I do enjoy writing. And, of course, there is always time for video games (yes, I still have my old Atari 2600 and all of the consoles I've collected through the years). I am also one of those old Epinions survivors and, as such, look forward to the opportunity of connecting with a writing community once again.

Interesting to see that you finally found this place. I've been wondering where all the old Epinions members are since so many seem to have left Bubblews. Some of us are here, though not all are 'active.' Even with all the frustrations, I think most of us miss Epinions.

I think a lot of us do miss Epinions (I'm one of those). It was truly unique and there has never been anything quite like it.

Perhaps the fact that Epinions failed tells us exactly why there has never been a site like that and probably never will be anything quite like it again.

Hey, Terry. Indeed you are from Arkansas! How have you been?

I don't think Epinions "failed" and neither do many others. I think it would be more accurate to say it was "killed" by two Corporate entities which neither understood nor appreciated its value. Just like the last 2 - 3 years where first SdC, then eBay tried to change it into something it wasn't. They never grasped that the potential synergy with their sites was more valuable than simply another 'shopping' site. The strength of Epinions and its value showed in the fact that it not only survived, it continued to draw traffic even as the Corporate entities starved it of funds, personnel, and Google access.

Of course, there was also a changing paradigm (partly fostered by one of Epinions' own, original lawyers) that companies should no longer pay for content; with far too many buying into that thought process without regard for the quality of that content. Thus, "failed" isn't quite the right word or perception. But, I agree, at least in the foreseeable future, there will probably not be anything quite like it and nothing exactly like it ever again.

I do believe you are right and stating that Epinions "failed" was a hasty judgment.

I believe we could actually go back farther and pinpoint poor money management as the reason those corporate entitles were necessary in the first place. When I signed up for Epinions in 2000, I was shocked at how much money I could make there. Had the initial investment not been spent so quickly, perhaps the site could have held on without having to sell out to other interests until it became profitable.

It is a lot of fun to play "what if," but the fact remains that Epinions is gone and a lot of us miss it.

I assume that you are then a realtor. i was a part-time realtor for about 9 months in 1994, but gave it up because I thought I didn't have the correct personality. Nice meeting you here and following you on Persona Paper.
