What Are Keywords?

Keywords are the words AND PHRASES that Google and Bing and other search engines look for. Why? Because these are what people SEARCH FOR. Search engines want to find information to satisfy the needs of searchers. They will first provide links to sites that pay them but if you find an area where no one is paying for search traffic, then you can get traffic from the search engines.

Why should I use them?

Keywords and keyword phrases get you TRAFFIC. traffic = VIEWS, views = coins and an improved site

Can I not write about what I want?

Of course. And if you are writing about what others might want to know too, then including keywords or phrases makes your article more likely to be found.

How do I incorporate them?

Some keyword phrases are easily incorporated into an article. For instance, I looked up "too much turmeric" in a keyword tool I have access too and found these:

  • is taking too much turmeric bad for you
  • is too much turmeric bad for health
  • can too much turmeric be bad for you
  • how to balance too much turmeric
  • too much turmeric in curry

Any or all of these phrases could easily be incorporated in an article and that would give you the opportunity to create an evergreen article that will be indexed by Google or Bing, for showing to someone who needs help.

Where do I let people know about my articles?

You do have to spread your articles, for instance, you could write a short article on here and the full article on your home blog and link the article on here to your blog. You could mention it on Tsu, you could add a nice picture and pin it on Pinterest. You could write a larger article on it on Hubpages and link to it from here. If people on here like it, they may Pin it, Tsu it or FB it.

Keywords for some different areas

I have looked up some keyword phrases for areas that some people write about on here. If your interest isn't included, let me know and I'll add some for that.

Excellent! Thank you, this helps and makes sense to me!

You have to be careful with keywords. Using too many in an article can get you into bother. I well remember a review (not mine) on Squidoo about caravans which was blocked by the site because of the overuse (they said) of the word 'caravan'! It can be a matter of fine judgement when and how to use keywords.

MegL wrote on June 16, 2015, 10:51 AM

Yes, quite right, however, if you use keyword phrases, you are less likely to be "over optimising". It's hard to write about caravans without using the word itself, isn't it? I wrote an article on steel one time and had to rewrite it before the site (not squidoo) would accept it because the word "steel" was used too much, according to them. So I had to use "this metal" and various other phrases in place of "steel".

Great article, Meg! It's important to remind folks that "keywords" can also be longer phrases that help to fine tune the focus of your writing. This is something that I think most social bloggers don;t really understand.

Kasman wrote on June 16, 2015, 10:58 AM

Or don't pay attention to. I don't - I just write!

LindaCPearson wrote on June 16, 2015, 11:25 AM

Excellent ideas. I do know that key words are really important but I sometimes forget to take advantage of them.

If I want to do an SEO article, I often find the phrases first, then use them to dictate the structure or the first few sentences.

Well, that's the problem isn't it? You have to use certain keywords & phrases to make yourself understood. Overuse of those phrases—as defined by whom?—gets you bounced. So I just write. And get ignored.

These are good hints and I would recommend that any new writer read this and take notes. Some of us older ones can use it too.

The use of tags or hashtags is becoming more widespread and is recommended. I really must find out more about how to use them to best effect

Great article! Thank you for the shout-out, and thanks also for going into more depth on SEO. I gathered by some of the comments that people wanted to learn more about that.

"How to" series of keywords usually get more views if you target a particular boring yet practical niche.

MegL wrote on June 21, 2015, 12:42 AM

Yes, is there a particular niche you would like me to add some keywords for, or just some "how to" keyword starter suggestions? Buy is also a useful starter keyword and review.
