Fear Of Flying

Most people love nothing more than spending a week or two in some exotic foreign land, just lounging by a pool or relaxing at the beach. But not me. I am terrified of flying.

I have been up in a plane four times in my life. Twice in 2001 for a holiday in Benidorm and twice in 2010 for a holiday in Menorca.

The first time around I was excited and was just a little bit nervous but I quite happily got on the plane and enjoyed my week away.

But two months later, the catastrophic events of September 11th rocked the world and from then on, the mere thought of being on any kind of aircraft would send me into a sweaty panic.

So in the spring of 2010, when my ex-fiance suggested we book a holiday abroad, you can imagine my reaction.

However, I felt obliged to say yes because he hadn't been on holiday for a while and was in desperate need of a break. So I reluctantly agreed and we booked 10 days in Menorca.

I didn't get much sleep in the months leading up to our departure and when that day arrived, I remember vomiting at least three times before we even left for the airport. My father had given me some Valium to calm me down but I didn't take any (I don't like taking pills I'm not used to).

So instead, I bit my nails until they bled and cried like a baby as the plane taxied down the runway. Thankfully, my ex was very supportive and comforted me for the whole two and a half hour journey.

I really enjoyed our time in Menorca and even managed to put the plane ride home to the back of my mind for the duration of our stay.

The trip back was just as scary as before, made worse by turbulence but thankfully, I refrained from crying!

But now I'm scared because my love for America is growing all the time and I'm truly worried that I will never be able to fulfill my dream of visiting New York.

Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated. Thanks for reading guys!

Martinis before flying...I'm not joking. One of my friends always gets me drunk before I have to get on a flight so I don't have a panic attack.

My wife looks at it this way: 'If the plane is going to crash then let it crash on the way home. That way we will have had a good holiday first' emoticon :winking:

That sounds like a great style to fly! ha ha. I do not get any panic attack, but I am scared to fly during rainy season.

I can certainly understand why some people may be afraid of flying. Personally, I'm not. I've enjoyed the experiences I've had, but I can understand why they terrify some. I do hope that you are able to fulfill your dream of going to New York, without making things much harder.

I hope you get over that fear because that will only hinder you doing good things that you will love and enjoy.
