Amtrak Tragedy in Philadelphia - I was Once a Passenger

So far 7 are known dead in the Amtrak derailing in Philadelphia, with hundreds hurt. The "black box" has been recovered. We await the results. Here is an article about the Amtrak incident.

Some years back, I was a passenger from Virginia to the 30th Street station in Philadelphia, where I met a friend I would stay with who lived in New Jersey. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Here is the article (from cache) I wrote concerning that event. No one is totally protected or shielded from all unfortunate, even tragic events. Keeping that in mind, I'm still pretty impressed at travel on board Amtrak.

I do not intend such an isolated incident to keep me from being active in life's activities, including travel by rail aboard Amtrak railways. Do you feel the same?

I use the trains in Northern Ireland quite a lot. They have a very good safety record, a lot safer than the roads!

Exactly the point, though I wouldn't extend it to planes. Planes are safer, but if you have an accident... well, I suppose you'd better have your Last Will & Testament in good order.

The reason why I don't ride Amtrak in California is because it's too expensive compared to automobile or bus and poor service such as no direct train from LA to Frisco or cross country from LA to Florida.

Well, I continue to take public transportation on light rail and bus. Automobile travel is a daily thing and I know there are dangers in every form of transportation, but I might even one day consider flying. Not sure where to.
