What's on the Telly?

The “telly”? That's what the call television. Right? In America it's television, TV, or some old folks used to call it the “ boob tube ”. Why are old people so resistant to technological advance ? No sooner than was invented, there was an army of senior citizens insisting that this contraption is going to warp the child's brains and make them stupid!

My personality was molded and my childhood was shaped by what was on television. Am I warped or stupid? Some might think so. Many of my family members think there are a few loose screws in my head. :)

At any rate, my mom always kept the TV set on, so when I came home after school there were certain sounds – or – of shows that are sort of now woven into the of my life; although the actual programs didn't interest me at all. Never watched them.

* * *

The Edge of Night (1956 – 1984) A my mom and her friends just had to keep up with. Could never understand the appeal. But somebody knew how to play a piano.

* * *

Dark Shadows (1966 – 1971) Uuuhh … this is horror? It looked like . The main character was a . Supposed to be scary. Why is it on in the afternoon? In broad daylight! Nothing is ever scary during the daytime hours!! Anyway did a comedy remake (2012) starring .

( Movie trailer .)

* * *

Dr. Who (1963 – 1989 and then it was regenerated !) Never watched what is now referred to as “ Dr. Who”. Some guy with dark curly hair and weird stuff always happening; and what's with the blue box spinning in space that looks like a telephone booth? Later on, as an adult, a genius who was in charge of casting picked David Tennant to play the Time Lord and for those episodes - I became a Dr. Who junkie. David Tennant has some kind of magnetism that really draws you to him. Je ne sais quoi!

Anyway it just so happens today is cause for celebration.

My mother used to love Coronation Street (still going) and Crossroads (about a motel) but I think that one finished a long time ago. We no longer have TV but I remember the first Dr Who - William Hartnell and the Daleks. I think one of my brothers used to hide behind the sofa when Dr Who was on because he was frightened of it.

Never watched them regularly but those two night time soaps were extremely popular! Used to hear people talking about JR. Everybody loved to hate him! My mom worked from home. She was a seamstress and a very good one! Thanks for commenting.

Never heard of either of those shows. (???) I can see how some of those Dr. Who characters could scare a young child. Thanks for visiting.

They are or were UK soap operas.

As well as 'telly' we also refer to television as 'tv' or 'the box'.

TV is also called the box. My mom watched The Edge of Night. Dark Shadows is now considered a camp classic and a favorite of contemporary horror filmmakers and fans. If you think about it, the idea of a vampire soap opera sounds ridiculous but it did serve as forerunner to Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. Dr. Who is a veritable institution in the UK. I love TV and make no apologies for it!

Thanks. I did not know that. :)

Yes indeed. I now realize that the shows I disregarded are monumental historical markers in the world of entertainment. I can't believe I ignored them! (O.o)

Just went to comic con and met this guy who looked creepily like a mini David Tennant... Even in profile. It was weird.

Thanks for sharing the photo! Just looked up to see if a comic con was scheduled for Austin, Texas. Won't happen until the end of October 2015.
