Health Update April 2015
Hey, y'all. I see it's been a week and a day since I posted. I didn't realize it had been that long but I've had a lot going on. I had two doctor appointments recently. One with my new lung doctor and one with my new heart doctor. I am glad to say that I really like them both. It's nice to once again see doctors that listen and seem to care.
The lung doctor did another pulmonary function test and it turns out that I have severe asthma. My lung function was only 43%. That's less than half, y'all. No wonder I have shortness of breath when walking up stairs or on hills. And here I thought it was just because I'm a little fattie. :)
She put me on an inhaler. Two puffs every morning and two every night. I go back in a month to have the PFT again and see if there is improvement. If so, then she says it is asthma, if not we have to do more tests.
The heart doctor said the hole in my heart and all the leaks are holding their own, then unless something else gets worse or happens they should stay that way. I sure hope so. He is also weaning me off the beta blockers.
I am so happy to get off those things! I believe, and he said it is possible, that they are why it's so hard for me to lose weight. I GAINED 32 pounds within two months of starting them and haven't lost it in the last five years, no matter what diet the docs had me try. Along with the weight problem, beta blockers cause me to have gastritis. It is a side effect of the drugs. It hurts! I sure hope it goes away when I'm off them. AND, it turns out that beta blockers can cause adult onset asthma. I never had shortness of breath or the other asthma symptoms until a few years ago, after I'd been on the beta blockers for a couple years and they kept upping them.
I was taking 150mg a day of the beta blocker. The doc has me doing 100mg for two weeks then 50mg for two weeks. Then I go back and see him to check my blood pressure and pulse. He said I might have to take a small does of beta blocker because of my rhythm issues(electrical problems) to keep my pulse down, and to keep palpitations under control. We won't know until I come off them though. I sure hope I don't need them at all, that he can just up my other bp med, which is what he said we'd probably do.
Anyway, otherwise I've still be walking but not as much as I'd like. I had a diverticulitis flare last week. It is almost gone, thank goodness. We did visit Gibbs Gardens this past weekend. It is beautiful, y'all. I will post some photos soon.
One thing did surprise me. I only had 69 notifications after a whole week of being gone. Have things slowed down here that much?
I hope y'all are all well.
