Why is it we fall?

Why is it people fall for the ones who don't want them? It's like the chase is better than the catch. I know I am guilty of doing so. When I like a guy and find they like me back I get over them and move on to the next. It's not until I come to someone who won't give me the time of day that I fall head over heels for, while at the same time I have great guys trying to be with me whom I don't like back.

I have also seen this around my friends and people my age. Maybe it's our generations nowadays. We want the thrill and attention that we ignore those who give it to us and instead go for the ones that won't. It's almost like a challenge with the goal being: make this person who ignores you to like you. Then you will be free from having feelings towards them.

Has anyone else seen this or experienced it? Is there an explanation? Is it just the generations today or has it always been like this? It seems like it has gotten more prominent since I came to college. Perhaps it's just the atmosphere. If somebody likes us back then that means the next step would be dating and most of us aren't looking for that right now. So maybe that's why we drop them and go after someone who isn't liking us back.

I think the explanation is simpler. We are selfish and competitive. When things come easy to us, we will not treasure.
