In Pursuit of Smoothness

This morning, I paid attention to how many products I used in simply getting washed up and dressed. My morning ablutions required, in this order:
1. toilet paper
2. soap
3. toothpaste
4. shampoo
5. conditioner
6. body wash
7. exfoliator (boys, this is a scrub that smooths the skin)
8. moisturizer
9. hair gel
10. deodorant
11. hand and foot cream
That doesn't count getting ready to go out of the house, which would involve the additional application of:
12. foundation makeup
13. concealer
14. pressed powder
15. bronzer (instead of blush)
16. eye shadow
17. eyeliner (i don't usually use mascara, so eyeliner is indispensable)
18. lipstick or gloss
19. perfume
20. hairspray
So, there you have it--20 different consumer products would be required for me to leave the house looking and smelling nice. And I consider myself 'low-maintenance' because I let my hair air-dry and don't usually do my nails. Sigh.
What made me choose the title that I did was the realization that so many of the products women use are in pursuit of smoothness--the hair conditioner, moisturizing body wash, exfoliator, moisturizer, and hand and foot cream are to make our hair and skin feel smooth, brushing my teeth makes them feel smooth. I shaved, as well, but I don't use a special product for that, but for most people, you could add "shave cream or gel" to the list of smoothing products. Heck even the hairspray smooths down 'fly-aways'!
Of course, this love of smoothness is no doubt a pursuit of endless youth, because nothing is smoother than a baby's...

Right now, it's about 30% insecurity, 20% love of play and 50% flauntiness. I expect those proportions will change!
