A Child's Understanding

I remember in first grade, being excited to hear that we were going to have an art class. There was a little problem with my expectation of it though...

I should mention that I am French, and in french, art is pronounced with a silent "t". Every time the teacher would announce that it was art class however, my young ears would hear "or" instead of "art". By the way, or means gold, so as a child, I thought my teacher was literally going to teach me how to make gold! I thought I was going to be rich!

And thus, every time it would be announced, I thought today would be the day I would learn the secret. The last classes were all a fluke, and this one would be it! It took me a few weeks (or months, I can't remember) to finally clue in to what the class was actually about! But fear not, I quickly got over my disappointment when I learned the truth. Art is fun after all!

Shame your teacher wasn't actually teaching alchemy (the art of turning base metals into gold) but that is probably only taught at Hogwarts. Glad you enjoy your art studies though

Yes, French and English pronunciations are quite different. I am finding this out in the online beginning French class which I am taking on Alison.com . Your little story about expecting gold from your art class is really funny.

French is a tricky language. Being French Canadian myself, I know how difficult the language can be.

Thanks! Good luck with your French classes!

I'm French Canadian too, and I only find it bad when I try to translate sentences and I realize how different the two languages are. But sometimes I find the English language tricky too (I still grumble when I forget to not pronounce the l in salmon LOL)

We sometimes forget how WELL students hear our words. Thank you for such a cute story.

LOL. What a cute and amusing story. It's too bad your teacher didn't actually teach you how to make gold. But at least you still got to enjoy your art classes. emoticon

lol, I love stories like this. It is fun to think back to what we thought was going to be happening as children!
