Forcing Kids To Hit The Books
Should we force our kids to study? This is the issue that is on my mind today. I know there would probably be many folks out there who would say that we should let kid be kids and learn to be responsible and set their own study schedule. I have tried this and have found out that when we leave our kids to their own devices, studying is the last thing on the minds.
I always thought that as kid grow older here will be able to focus on their books more but in reality they just seem to complete their homework and consider their work done. Now i force them to set study times for themselves and see that that they stick to it.
As a retired teacher I think that school alone is not enough for students education performance. kids need to open their books more often and do extra reading to be able to understand topics covered in school. I definitely found that my kids seem to be more confident when studying was done at home.
When the kids were in the primary level, I used to supervise their work closely but now that they are I their teens they are more accountable for their performance.
i totally disagree with parents who do not demand that their kids hit the books at home. I do recall how students used to perform in their tests in school and found that those whose parents were involved in their studies did dramatically better than those who never opened their books at home. These kids learnt quickly and were able to grasp lesson taught in school quickly. Parents too took the trouble to visit the school on Parents day to discuss their children's performance.
These little thing made a big difference in the future of the kids. They were more confident and able to secure better colleges and do better in life.
With this in mind I yell at my kids, "HIT THE BOOKS!"
