The Best Nana Ever!

Nana was the big old dog who took care of Wendy, John and Michael Darling in Peter Pan. Nana was the children's nurse.
In 1904, the first Nana was played by a man wearing a dog suit. In a 1924 Peter Pan silent film, actor George Alive played the part of Nana the dog.
Many are not clear on what breed of dog Nana happened to be. In the early play, Nana was to be a Newfoundland since the author, Mr. Barrie, owned a Newfie. Barrie also owned a St. Bernard.
In the Disney adaptation of Peter Pan , Nana was certainly a St. Bernard. Dogs who played Nana in P.J. Hogan's adaptation in 2003 were St. Bernard dogs too.
Whether it be St. Bernard or Newfoundland playing the part of Nana, I do believe either of the two breeds is perfect for the role as caretaker of children! They fling a lot of slobber, but kids don't care!

I remember reading that story when I was a little thing, maybe that was the beginning of my love affairs with the rascals who are in charge of our lives as they sit looking at us with their lead dangling from their mouth, head on one side.....

I was wondering when I saw the photo of the dog if this would be around Peter Pan. :)

Oh wonderful idea! Some big dogs are so huge, sad, wise and lovely indeed. Now I wanna watch Peter Pan

I love dogs of any breed. I currently have a dachshund. She is my lap buddy.

Either way, the breeds do fit! It makes sense.

Ha ha, I was just thinking that Newfies are known for slobber right before you said it. I would have thought that was yucky as a kid, but I do remember being fascinated that the kids had a dog for a nanny!

They are both wonderful breeds of dogs--quite given to patience with young children.

Definitelty better breeds than a man in a costume lol, I didn't know there were so many alternatives to the story.

I like cats. I don't dislike dogs though.

I would like to agree with that too. I had enough of bad nanas around here.

Isn't that interesting, I didn't know the story of Peter Pan and the dog being the one who took care of the kids, I learned something new today.
