My granddaughter is heavily burdened with winter vacation homework

There are only three days to go before the school takes up ,so my granddaughter, a third grade primary school pupil , is now rushing her winter vacation homework .The winter vacation started from February 7 and school will begin on March 1.Within about 20 days ,she has to finish Chinese ,mathematics and English homework , six big books altogether –she does straight on the books rather than on exercise books as I did in my time . Poor girl !She spends 3 hours or so doing her homework every day ,apart from 6 days during the Chinese New Year when she had a great time ,playing with kids of her own age ,tagging along with her parents to pay a New Year calls to relatives . I see no reason why the teacher assigned so much winter vacation homework to a third grade primary school pupil and some questions in the homework are pitched too high for them, which frequently involve us in them .

Ah I remember the days of school holidays and homework - there always seemed to be too much!

To tag for PP, you will use the # not the +

Thank You ! I replace + with# ,It really does it work。

However I remember in my time there was not as much homework as them .Kids her age should have more time to play or sit down to have a nice quiet read .

MegL wrote on February 26, 2015, 6:15 AM

Kids should do most of their learning in school. Homework should just be for practice!

I totally agree with you .Kids must have plenty of time to engage in some after-school activities so that tap intellectual resources of them .

Aww, poor girl.. I heard, though correct me if I'm wrong, but in China, the students work so much harder than here in America. Even as a college student, I wonder if my work is not that bad compared to students in your country. Now my son, being in only 7th grade, has like no homework, even after missing over a week of school due to the weather and I am concerned because when he gets into high school and then college, he will have a lot more homework and I might have to help him organize his schedule when that time comes.

jiangliu1949 wrote on February 27, 2015, 7:55 AM

Personally I can't see the point of letting a third grade primary school pupil do so much homework ,which is just what is called exercises-stuffed teaching method .I had less homework in my time .

Carmelanirel wrote on March 1, 2015, 9:57 AM

I don't know how the schools work there, but here different schools have different ways of teaching. Like the school my son goes to, he is there longer, but has less homework than the next district where the students have shorter days, but more homework.

Maybe it also varies from school to school here .I think it is better to let schoolchildren work at their own pace .

Carmelanirel wrote on March 2, 2015, 10:48 AM

I do too, as a student myself, I find I do better when I am working at my own pace. I mean I have deadlines, but I can either do it all at once, or take the whole week to work on it slowly.

jiangliu1949 wrote on March 2, 2015, 11:59 PM

Yes,I don't think too much homework would be of some help to my granddaughter ,on the contrary ,that may make her be tired of studying .

Carmelanirel wrote on March 3, 2015, 9:15 AM

Well I hope she was able to get it done. I am trying to avoid overload by doing some of my homework before I go back to school, that way at least the first week or two I am not so overwhelmed.. ;-P

Now school has begun ,my granddaughter has handed in all her homework .Yesterday I occasionally logged in Bubblews and saw one of smilepie 's posts .No sooner had I wanted to comment on it than it was down and I have n 't logged in it again from then on .

Awww, I miss SmilePie, I might sign in before I go back to school and check on her...

When I lived in Taiwan in the 70s, I had an adopted son who was also in the third or fourth grade of a Taiwanese school. I remember him having a lot of winter break home work, too!

jiangliu1949 wrote on March 7, 2015, 12:58 AM

I don't think it makes sense to assign too much homework to a three grade pupil .We should let them have some time to themselves .

CoralLevang wrote on March 8, 2015, 7:50 AM

There needs to be balance. On the other hand, most American kids are lazier when it comes to studies. The school system seems to allow for it, as well.

Paulie wrote on March 9, 2015, 12:22 AM

I totally agree with you. If homework must be given, it should be in the form of review exercises which will help a student understand something which he or she couldn't grasp in class. Homework should never be busy work.

jiangliu1949 wrote on March 9, 2015, 4:06 AM

Yes ,I have nothing against pupil doing a certain amount of home work ,only hope it is not the amount that weighs them down .

jiangliu1949 wrote on March 9, 2015, 4:32 AM

However it is necessary for pupils to do some homework if it isn't too much ,which can help them digest what they have learnt .

maxeen wrote on April 16, 2015, 2:08 PM

When my kids were at school the teachers asked us not to help(Relief)as they were doing different ways of teaching..

iwrite28 wrote on April 22, 2015, 4:22 AM

It is totally unfair homework to be done during holidays

VinceSummers wrote on June 4, 2015, 6:55 AM

I always say that if the pupil must take home a lot of homework, it means the teacher isn't doing his or her job. It's humorous that in the U.S., when school is out and the teachers gather together at school for a day, they call it a teacher work day. What do they do all the other days? Snooze?

VinceSummers wrote on June 4, 2015, 6:57 AM

What you are saying here is the truth, jianlius1949. It was also true in my case, and I can hold my own with any of the ones who were raised with a ton of homework.

jiangliu1949 wrote on June 5, 2015, 3:24 AM

I agree with you .I don't think it helps for pupils to do too much homework ,quite the contrary ,they will be increasingly allergic to studying .

Shellyann36 wrote on July 18, 2015, 2:34 AM

That poor girl! For some reason teachers are sending home more homework here in the states too.

jiangliu1949 wrote on July 18, 2015, 5:29 AM

Thank you for commenting !Now summer vacation has begun ,the homework makes heavy demands on her too .

Shellyann36 wrote on July 21, 2015, 12:30 AM

Kids here don't get summer homework during their vacation unless they have to go to summer school.

jiangliu1949 wrote on July 21, 2015, 3:33 AM

I am surprised hids there have no summer homework .Personally I don't think doing too much homework would go a long way to kids' study .
