Stupid Things that Always Happen in Movies and TV Shows, Item #2 -- I Really, Really, REALLY Will Shoot You

Another stupid thing they always do on TV shows for dramatic effect is have one character draw a gun and threaten to shoot another character if the other character doesn't do something--open the safe, throw away their own gun, give up some information--whatever. The second character resists, and the gun-wielder THEN and ONLY then cocks his pistol or chambers his round, to let the second person know HE REALLY MEANS BUSINESS, at which point the second person tends to capitulate.
So, let me get this straight: You pointed a gun at someone that was not ready to fire. And then you figured they would be more likely to respond to having a gun on them if you made it ready to fire. Because apparently, "I will shoot you" has to be trumped by, "Hey, I REALLY WILL shoot you."
And half the time, these armed characters are actually cops, who have drawn their guns in pursuit of fleeing suspects. Now tell me that in real life, the police who draw their guns because they may need to shoot quickly do NOT make sure there is already a round in the chamber.

Ha, ha...yes, you hit the nail on the head with that one.

This serves a purpose, though: if they took all the "drama" out of the movie/show between the time when someone pulls the gun out and when they actually shoot it (oh, and have you noticed they shoot everyone EXCEPT the star? They take him/her somewhere and threaten to deal with them later...but that's for another "stupid things that always happen in movies and TV shows" installment, no doubt) it would only be about 12 minutes long.

Yes movies can be stupid but it is the effect that they are looking for

Well, you know that they have to do what they can to heighten the drama, 'cause we're all so dang-blasted jaded these days, lol!

LOL
. Yeah, it is stupid but I guess they're doing it for the dramatic effect, to create suspense, etc.
