How can I comment on a post without viewing it?

I recently commented on a post by one of my friends here, after which I clicked the Like button. Something seemed to attract my attention so I looked a little closer at the Views and Likes for the post.

The post was actually showing 0 Views and 1 Like. Surely this should be impossible because I cannot comment on a post and like it without ever opening it in the first place.

I have heard that some people have had more Likes than Views, which they have assumed is due to people using an ad blocker. This is certainly not the case in this instance because I would never use such a utility, which would effecti8vely remove any earning potential for the site.

I do appreciate that it may not register the view immediately, but submitting a comment refreshes the page and clicking the Like button refreshes it again. I totally fail to comprehend what hyas happened.

I don't think that has happened to me, but I will pay attention.

MelissaE wrote on February 14, 2015, 8:08 AM

Okay, both my view and like just showed up immediately on yours.

bestwriter wrote on February 14, 2015, 8:14 AM

This is what is being noticed of late. I just brought it to the attention of another user about this. That user had 10 comments and only 8 views.

maxeen wrote on February 14, 2015, 8:35 AM

Strange things do happen, just hope it starts to behave.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 8:36 AM

It is probably difficult to notice unless you are the first person to view the post.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 8:38 AM

It does make me wonder how often this has occurred because most of the time I would not notice.

Hollyhocks100 wrote on February 14, 2015, 9:22 AM

It really doesn´t make sense Barry as you say, but I don´t have an answer. Maybe you could tag or and they will answer your question. I seem to remember this happening on Hubpages when I wrote there.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 9:54 AM

It was one of your posts this morning that it happened on Anne. Of course it would even help if I left the page and returned because I would never know if a view was from my returning or another member.

Hollyhocks100 wrote on February 14, 2015, 9:59 AM

I had a feeling it might have been Barry as you are always so quick off the mark.

Dawnwriter wrote on February 14, 2015, 10:37 AM

I would also request elitecodex and Maelou to look into this. It is either a glitch or something wrong with view counter. AS I type this comment, your post shows 3 views, while you have had 4 unique people (bestwriter, maxeen, MelissaE and Hollyhocks100) before me commenting here.

It totally confused me because I commented o the post, liked the pot and apparently never viewed it.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 10:45 AM

That makes 5 people commenting, but it still shows 3 views at present.

Dawnwriter wrote on February 14, 2015, 11:00 AM

I am stumped. I can assure you I do not have ad blocker and can see the ads on this page quite clearly so why was my view not added unless it gets done at a later time???

UK_Writer wrote on February 14, 2015, 11:08 AM

I can't believe the views counts - they seem so low. It's difficult, with so much confidence shattered on other sites, to always trust what your eyes show you on other sites.

nbaquero wrote on February 14, 2015, 11:30 AM

Koalemos at this moment the count on this post is showing 3 Views and 2 Likes, I don't use an Ad Blocker, so I would expect my view counted.

nbaquero wrote on February 14, 2015, 11:32 AM

And yes, as soon I submitted my comment the view count went to 4, so at least in this case is working as designed.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 11:35 AM

So far 7 different people have commented on this post, but there are only 4 views.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 11:35 AM

With 7 people having commented there is certainly an issue.

rosepetal wrote on February 14, 2015, 12:01 PM

I haven't paid much attention to it. I guess I had better do some checking on my own as well. Maybe it is a glitch that needs to be corrected.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 12:30 PM

It was only by chance that I happened to notice. You will see that 8 different people have commented on this post, but there are only 5 views.
It will take a very long while to reach the payout target here, but if the views stop counting it will become impossible.

nbaquero wrote on February 14, 2015, 12:37 PM

As Dawnwriter indicated, I also think this needs to be investigated further by the Admins to determine the root cause of the issue.

ChickJ wrote on February 14, 2015, 1:32 PM

I have notice it before. I just thought it takes time for the counts to catch up. Especially when a lot of people view your posts.

Koalemos wrote on February 14, 2015, 1:48 PM

That would sound plausible, but you are commenter number 9 and I have still only 6 views.

Feisty56 wrote on February 14, 2015, 3:44 PM

I agree with Dawnwriter 's suggestion to bring this concern to administration. They are the only ones who can truly answer this; the rest of us are speculating. It may also be an issue on the technical side of the site that needs some tweaking.

zabelle51 wrote on February 14, 2015, 7:15 PM

That is rather disturbing isn't it? I don't use ad blocker so I am hoping this view counts. :0

grandma20121 wrote on February 14, 2015, 7:58 PM

now that is strange for sure i can not possibly figure that out either, you need to view in order to comment i thought

cheri wrote on February 15, 2015, 3:31 AM

I have never paid a closer look to that, and may be I should check. I am also thinking that it may take a little while for that to appear.

crowntower wrote on February 15, 2015, 12:36 PM

So you think ad blocker is not the solely reason why the number of views are not all reasonable to the number of likes and comment of the page?

elitecodex wrote on February 15, 2015, 1:25 PM

We do have a number of checks that views go through before they are counted... some of which we have talked about before. Some of which we have not - simply because we need to maintain some secrecy about that to prevent abuse. The obvious ones are ad blockers or anti-virus software that may disable javascript. Both of those would automatically prevent any views from showing up... but we also take other information into account. IP address, HTTP headers, timing, etc. For example, if you just click to open a page and then close it out, that view won't count. The view is only "tested" after a short time period after the page is fully loaded (and we confirm actual human activity).

If you are concerned about a view not counting on a particular post, let me know which one and I can investigate. We keep a log of every view that is counted so I can investigate later on if needed. However, we cannot provide a "test" page to see if any issues arise with your setup and our detection software since it would give any abusers a way to test and get around our filters. But we haven't changed anything since sometime in the October/November timeframe I believe.

The nature of databases can also delay updates. For example, we can send an "UPDATE" command which increments the views but the next query (which after a like/comment is only milliseconds) can return the old data depending on how busy it is. For example, this one has 14 unique views and 14 comments (not including mine) but since I am running ad block software my view doesn't count here. But this sort of delay shouldn't be anymore than a few seconds at most.

Koalemos wrote on February 15, 2015, 4:10 PM

After noticing this I have paid more attention and the issue seems to be quite prolific.

Koalemos wrote on February 15, 2015, 4:11 PM

Exactly, but I would not have noticed had I not been the first person to respond.

Koalemos wrote on February 15, 2015, 4:12 PM

I would never have thought to check either, but the zero views rather made it obvious.

Koalemos wrote on February 15, 2015, 4:13 PM

It cannot possibly be because I would never use such a pointless utility.

Koalemos wrote on February 15, 2015, 4:20 PM

I agree with much of your explanation and I am grateful that you took the time to explain.
However, this was definitely not the case in the example I quoted in the article. The time involved reading the article and commenting allowed more than sufficient, after which I clicked the Like button.
I returned a few minutes later and even refreshed he page manually, but it still had no views.
I have never used an ad blocker, which I personally feel should be banned on sites such as this because it would interfere with the site's income.

elitecodex wrote on February 16, 2015, 2:23 PM

Can you tell me which post specifically? Ad blockers are not the only thing... anything that interferes or blocks javascript from running in general can cause it (antivirus for example).

I just ran a quick grep through todays logs and did find that your views are being counted as I can see the hits to the auditor. If you can tell me what post I can look at it specifically but I don't see any errors with your account when it comes to viewing posts.

bleekley wrote on February 18, 2015, 6:59 PM

I was glad to read your warning about using an ad blocker. I recently installed one. After reading your post, I disabled it on the Persona Paper site. However, if this site continues to allow intrusive ads, such as videos that start themselves like it or not, I might close my account and avoid this site. There is never an excuse for a website to allow intrusive ads.

Koalemos wrote on February 18, 2015, 7:11 PM

I share your opinion on such videos because they interrupt any music we may be playing at the time.

BodieMor wrote on March 6, 2015, 11:45 AM

I have noticed that occasionally as well. And on looking back on those pages, the circumstance has not changed.

Koalemos wrote on March 6, 2015, 2:24 PM

Some of these instances can be explained by adblockers, but it occurs me often than that.or

BodieMor wrote on March 6, 2015, 4:20 PM

Do you mean ad blockers on the pages of those who visit you?
