Last Minute Simple Valentine's Meal

A Bit Late For Valentine's Day?

Today is Valentine's Day, so maybe it's a bit late now to let you think about what kind of Valentine's meal you might prepare for your Valentine. On the other hand, some of you may now be panicing about what to do or have forgotten until just now.

Simple Meal

Here is a simple, easy to prepare meal, with a few options so you can vary it depending on whether you or your Valentine don't like a particular item.

Accessories

Get a card. Where are you going to eat? Is it clean and reasonably tidy? Is your bathroom clean and your bedroom? A food list is below for after you have decided what to eat.

Starters

Easiest starter is scrambled egg with smoked salmon, however, scrambled egg can be messy and needs to be made just before being served. It also leaves a messy pan that takes a while to clean and the dishwasher doesn't always get it clean. My Alternative - mashed hard-boiled egg. I don't know what it would be called. The toddlers like it and I like it too. It looks good and it's exactly the right portion size for a starter. It can also be prepared ahead of time!

Mashed eggs

You need two hard boiled eggs, a little knob of butter OR a drop of salad cream OR mayonnaise if you prefer and some salt and pepper. Cut the two eggs up small, then continue to mash them down into fine particles with a fork. Add the butter (or salad cream or mayonnaise) and salt and pepper and mash until fine. Divide the mashed egg into two portions and serve on a plate.

Additions

You can serve on lettuce leaves, or with two triangles of toast or with smoked salmon. Or use ALL items.

Easy to prepare.

Alternatives

Soup, or slice of melon

Main Course

Easiest main course, I think, is chicken stir fry. You may prefer to make vegetable stir fry or even beef stir fry

Chicken stir fry

You will need one pound (500g) of chicken pieces (get them ready cut up from the butcher, or buy chicken breast fillets and cut into pieces) and a packet of stir fry vegetables. Many shops sell these as packets.

The absolute minimum is a tablespoon of oil heated in a frying pan, add the chicken pieces over a high heat (careful) and fry until seared on the outside and cooked through ( a few minutes), add the vegetables and continue to fry, stirring all the time. Add salt and pepper. Remove frying pan from heat and add a cup of water. You can serve by itself or with toast or on rice or on lettuce.

Additions

You could get a packet of Chinese spices and add those, or a packet of stir fry sauce and add that (read THEIR instructions).

You could also add chopped onion and garlic after frying the chicken and before adding the stir fry veg, if you wish.

Alternatives

Salad. Buy ready washed salad leaves, add cooked sliced chicken (bought) hard boiled eggs, a slice of an orange or a few grapes.

Dessert

Strawberries dipped in chocolate.

You will need a some large strawberries (wash and dry them!) and a bar of dark chocolate. Break the dark chocolate into pieces put them in a glass heat proof bowl and melt over a saucepan of boiling water (careful). When the chocolate is melted, hold the strawberries carefull and dip them in to coat the bottom half. Leave to cool on a plate.

GET READY

Choose your menu, buy your ingredients, serve your meal.

Enjoy Your Evening

The only valentine I remember is the one of 2006 when I had that ghastly accident that kept me in bed for quite a while.

Why not bring back the romance of the first date - and take her for chips behind the gasworks?
