Blow Ye Western Winds!

So California is getting hammered today. After 42 dry days, rain in settling in and I am grateful for it. The wind started up this morning by about 7 and the worst of the storm should arrive later this afternoon. In the interim, I have done a bit of writing, have walked the dog and have started two pots of soup: a tomato lentil and a curry butternut squash.

Here is a short poem to think about as the storm settles over us.

Gray against black

a single gull seeks out currents

against black

before buffets

pull it to ground.

As I was waling early this morning, a saw a single gull trying to navigate currents, perhaps seeking out shelter. It struck me that no other birds were out.

It's always a bad sign when the birds abandon the place, isn't it. Fortunately I've woken to a sunny day today, after two days of summer storms. The birds are chirping loudly.

Not even the squirrels are out right now

Lovely poem. I hope the lone gull found a safe harbor from the buffeting winds. We get some strong winds out here in Texas, too. Hunker down and enjoy your delicious soup.

I saw on the news the west coast was getting rocked with much needed rain... we haven't seen a bird for quite awhile due to snow!

I slept my morning away so I didn't know about the rain until 2:00 p.m.

I think my coastal area might be experiencing that same California storm. Oregon has had 2 days of hard rain and that is what our moisture consists of here. I watch the birds to see how they are handling life too.

I bet you get some winds out in Texas! Take care Peg!

I bet birds hunker down in snow as well!

It was pouring! Still is!

I think it is the same weather system that we are getting now!

When birds do not visit our bird bath I wonder too, not that I am expecting a storm but just wonder.

We had high winds all day and most of the night. If I had a car, I would just go out and drive in it. That's how much I like this weather. Sunday driving because no one else will want to be out there.

Here in northeastern USA, we're getting hammered with snow and sub-freezing temps. Good luck with all your rain.

I often wonder where squirrels go? Do they have nests?

AudreyHowitt wrote on February 9, 2015, 11:56 AM

I hear your weather is really weather!!

Hate to hear that bad weather is coming. It looks like our forecast is going downhill too. Highs in the 40's today and only in the single digits by Saturday

All that dry weather in California. I think it must be a sign of climate change.

I know the answer to this one: Yes, squirrels do have nests, some being fairly large. I used to have an entire family of squirrels nesting in a pine tree outside my kitchen window.

Ah! Thank you for letting me know that!!

Very nice poem. It is snowing here at the moment. The first snow we have had this season that has been more than a few flakes. The ground is actually covered. Enjoy the rain.

Didn't get to your post until April--and when did you get rain? I sure wish we would. Here in N. California we got some sprinkles a week or so ago, but nothing that was good for anything. They say there's rain coming, but Iike I tell my mother, "I'll believe it when I see it".

Thank you for sharing your poem. ;D

You must be in Northern California if you are getting rain. It is still dry as a bone down here in SoCal. But rain up north does have a positive affect even for us down here.
