Happy birthday !Better half !

Today is my wife 63rd birthday .As soon as I get up in the morning ,I buy her " xiaolongbaozi "(transliteration ) for breakfast ,xiaolongbaozi namely small steamed bun with meat stuffing .Usually my wife prepares lunch ,now I take it upon myself to make it .What is for lunch ! What are the main courses ? of course ,roast chicken and pearl meatball ,which I am adept at cooking .Some of you must have no idea of what the pearl meatcall is .Put it this way ,let the meatballs roll across glutinous rice so as to wrap all the meatballs with glutinous rice , then steam them .When they are done ,needless to say the grains of glutinous rice on the meatballs would remind you of the pearls .It doesn't take me so much time to get lunch ready .It is a hearty lunch and our whole family 's happiness knows no bounds .We plan to eat out in the evening .

jiangliu1949 sorry I missed her special day, but tell her I said Happy Belated Birthday! The food sounds delicious, I can only imagine what the meatballs rolled in rice tastes like, yummy!!!

Thank you ! I will tell her about your kind words .We have different eating habits and I remember you don't like pork that much .

Carmelanirel wrote on February 10, 2015, 3:38 PM

It isn't so much as I don't like it, I use to eat it all the time. But with some research along the fact that the bible does call pork unclean, I am learning it isn't as healthy as many believe and can even be harmful. So after so many years of not eating it, yeah I don't think I could handle the taste since the smell bothers me too.

jiangliu1949 I am sure you can use all beef meatballs for this dish, right? That is what I was thinking, because I love beef meatballs...

jiangliu1949 wrote on February 11, 2015, 1:31 AM

We hardly use beef meatballs for it like Hui people (Islam ) here do .Pork is also our daily meat ,though we eat it in moderation due to it being high in cholesterol .

Carmelanirel wrote on February 11, 2015, 7:03 AM

Yes, Islamic people don't eat pork, and people who are Jewish don't either, although I heard Islam does eat some kind of shellfish, (I think shrimp) so their diet isn't Biblical. If I can't find pre-made meatballs that is all beef, then I make my own, problem is that takes time, so fortunately we can find it in certain stores.

My daughter- in -law 's Mum is the Huis who frequently makes the beef meatballs ,whereas we like the dried beef prepared with all kinds of spices .

Carmelanirel wrote on February 12, 2015, 10:34 AM

We just bought some ground lamb, I wonder if that makes good meatballs? As for dried beef with spices, my son loves that, but unless we make it ourselves, it is very expensive.

We love mutton too ,but generally we eat it in winter ,because we think it is hot-natured.It tastes well ,small wonder our Chinese character for delicious consists of sheep and fish .

Mutton, from what I gather, is from older sheep, I don't really like it. The younger sheep meat have a sweeter taste and that is what we got. I tihnk I will make some real shepherds pie sometime next week. emoticon :winking:

I know you meant the lamb , which we use to make instant boiled slices .

Xiaolong bao is expensive here. I hardly dare to spend money on it.

jiangliu1949 wrote on February 21, 2015, 3:28 AM

Yes ,we don't eat it on the every day basis either .

Happy birthday to your lovely wife. The food sounds delicious. I have often wanted to experience traditional Chinese cuisine. The dishes we get here as "Chinese" are American variety, mostly, which are mostly fried, and have sickening sweet (to me) sugary sauces. I won't eat them.

jiangliu1949 wrote on March 9, 2015, 5:42 AM

Thank you very much ! I don't know what the Chinese dishes there are like ,maybe they aren't the authentic ones .Over here we have several major styles of cooking in which they have their own unique flavour .

CoralLevang wrote on March 9, 2015, 1:13 PM

I have eaten authentic Chinese regional cooking. It is delicious.
I assure you that most of the Chinese restaurants that most Americans go to and think is "Chinese" serve something that Chinese people would not eat. emoticon :winking:

jiangliu1949 wrote on March 10, 2015, 6:55 AM

Obviously ,the restaurants you mentioned are either copy ones or serving Sichuan dish from southwest China's Sichuan province ,which is too peppery to eat for one who isn't used to it .
