Diary – Thursday 22nd January 2015
I had to report to two separate welfare advisors today. Initially the appointments clashed but I was able to move the second mandatory meeting back a few hours.
The first was just to sign on, where they check my job searching activity is on-going. The second should have been more involved with recommended job leads for me to follow, but my advisor was interrupted by two other clients (not booked in for appointments) who had run out of money due to one of them being fired. (they live together) It took him quite a while to get them out of the way.
He asked me for lots of details he should already have from the advisor he replaced, and offered me a few jobs that I can’t get to for their start times being outside the reach of public transport to me. He insists that I don’t tell them this until the close of the interviews and then use it to negotiate alternate hours. Such firms have fixed hours so this is likely to just infuriate them, wasting their time as much as mine. He is just keen to be seen making sure he sends me for things regardless of whether they are realistic or not.
In the evening I met with friends for a fortnightly science fiction group meeting. Some of my friends there had read through my radio scripts and enjoyed them. One writer there told me my work does tend to rush and could actually benefit for being longer. It’s quite nice that someone felt my writing needs expanding rather than compressing.
