Mr. Potato Head

I play a trivia quiz game I subscribed to along time ago. Not because I want to see how smart I can be, but since any answer is only a Google away, I like to pretend I'm learning at least one new thing each day. So, today I get this question about what was the first toy ever televised on television. I had no clue, so I looked it up and lo and was Mr. Potato Head! Who doesn't know what or who Mr. Potato Head is? Even today's youngsters have seen him in the Toy Story animated films.

I was surprised to learn that the actual first potato head kits were just the parts to make the faces and hands. They were called piece packets and you bought those and had to use a real potato from Mom's potato bin when you wanted to "play". I guess after the parents got tired of tying to find where the smell of rotting potatoes were coming from, Mr. Potato Head finally went to the plastic head piece in 1964. So, it's even more impressive that over one million kits were sold that first year and was said to gross over $4 million. That's alot of plastic eyes!!!

There was some dispute by Mattel, claiming it's Mickey Mouse Guitar was actually first, but Hasbro's Potato Head gets the honor. And, not to be forgotten, the Mrs. Potato Head came to be the very next year in 1953. So, now you know. That also happens to be the year that I came to be, so maybe that explains why I love potatoes so much.

Here's another bit of trivia about Mr. Potato Head. In 1987 Hasbro decided to drop the pipe so children wouldn't think about smoking.
