Some of the Strangest Superstitions

There are so many different superstitions and even those that don't believe in them still practice a few so we don't get bad luck. I am not a very superstitious person, but there are just a few I do fear might be true and hear myself repeating. For instance if you break a mirror it means seven years of bad luck. Don't walk under a ladder which is just common sense really.

How about a black cat crossing your path on Friday the 13th? I don't feat that one at all. I would actually try and feed or pet the cat if I saw it. Those are just some basic superstitions, but here are some of the strangest superstitions from around the world that I have ever heard.

France - It is good luck to step on dog crap with your left foot, bad luck to step on it with your right foot.

Malaysia - If you sit on a pillow it will cause your bottom and back to be covered in boils, blisters, and other sores.

Germany - It is bad luck to cheers with water. It means yo are wishing death upon everyone you are drinking with.

Spain - Tuesday the 13th is to be feared.

Italy - Friday the 17th is bad luck. The reasoning is because the Roman numeral XVII (17) can be arranged to make the word "VIXI" and in Latin it means "my life is over."

Bulgaria - You want birds to poop on you, it's good luck.

China - The number 4 is incredibly unlucky. Some buildings even refuse to have a fourth floor.

Portugal - It is bad luck to walk backwards because it shows the devil your path.

Finland - If you kill a spider it is said it will bring on the rain the following day.

Turkey - If you're chewing gum at night it is said be rotting dead flesh not gum at all.

Nigeria - If you kiss a baby on the lips they will grow up to be a drooling adult.

Russia - It is bad luck to carry an empty bucket or even see someone carrying an empty bucket.

Egypt - It is bad luck to open and close a pair of scissors if you're not cutting anything. It's even worse if you leave them open. It is said you are cutting evil spirits lingering around in the air and they will become upset.

Rwanda - Women are taught not to eat goat meat because it will cause them to grow facial hair.

Netherlands - If you sing at the dinner table you are singing to the devil for food, and it is considered bad luck.

Brazil - If your wallet or purse touch the floor, you are cursed to be poor.

Spain - If you enter a room with your left foot it is said to be bad luck.

There are plenty, plenty more but these are ones I have heard more then once and some people have a very strong belief in them.

I feel if you believe some of them strongly enough they seem real because you will cause the bad or good luck to happen.

I still knock on wood and throw spilled salt over my left shoulder even though I know better.
