Life And Loss Of My Mice(s)

Yes, I know there really isn't supposed to be an "s" there! emoticon

I love having critters, I think they're so cute and make fun pets. I like to spoil them with a large cage (55 gallon glass aquarium) and lots of critter toys; running wheels, bridges, hideaways. I also use tissue boxes and paper towel rolls as extra, free/cheap things for them.

Just over a year ago I adopted 5 mice from PetSmart. I initially adopted 3 (they were the last ones of a litter left) and then I was told about 2 mice that had just been through quite the ordeal! These 2 mice had been bought to be used as feeders for a woman's snake. When the snake attacked one of the mice, the other one attacked the snake to save her sister! Both mice were returned to Petsmart, and both were traumatized! How could I say no??

Well, sad to say I am down to just 2 mice now.

The first one that passed was named Maple. I lost her not too long after I got them, she had developed cancer and had lumpy tumors all over her body.

The second one I lost was named Dez. She was the most social out of the bunch (even though none of them really like(d) being handled. Dez was killed by one of my mom's Chihuahuas :( I had been cleaning their cages, and as I was turned away he snatched her. I had cleaned them an upwards of 30 times before with no incidents, so I had no reason to believe this time would be any different. :( Needless to say the dogs are no longer allowed in the room while the cages are being cleaned.

The mouse I lost just the other day was named Tye. I'm not really sure what happened to her. I just realized one night as I was getting into bed that she was dragging her back legs. My friend from PetSmart who had adopted the mice to me said her back was broken. I took her to the vet there and had her put down. emoticon

I am now left with 2 senior mice, Spryte and Mazzie. After they pass I would like to adopt my next "pocket pet" from a rescue. I have been in contact with the Hamsterdam rescue in Arizona, and will be adopting from them as soon as my little ones are gone.

Does anyone else here have pocket pets?

That is a sorry tale about the snake, they must have been very traumatised indeed by that :(

Yeah my friend at PetSmart was not happy about that. PetSmart does not sell live mice to be feeders, they are only supposed to be adopted as pets. They sell frozen mice for feeders. This woman who got these two lied about her intentions.

Wow brave mouse to defend her sister. I've had rats, gerbils lizards, newts and a turtle.. the turtle lived 22 years.

I know! That's what I thought! How could I not take home the hero mouse and her poor sister and spoil them with a giant cage and lots of toys/wheels!? Lol. I like reptiles (lizards, snakes) but I just never really had them as pets. No snakes because I don't want any pets that I have to feed other pets too...but lizards and things, they just aren't as much "fun" to me as critters. Mice I can watch play and run around, lizards don't seem to do much except look cool! But I still like them! Lol

When we were young we had a turtle that swam in our pool with us - I loved that! Lol

They are very cute in the picture. But I do not want to have one I am afraid.
