I Never Know What To Do When People Are Racist

I moved to Alaska from San Francisco. I love Alaska. Don't get me wrong. There is one thing here that drives me crazy. People in San Francisco are rarely casually racist, but in Alaska it's really common to listen to someone talking about how they hate natives, or how they don't trust black people.

I spent too long in California and no longer know how to process racism or homophobia. I feel like I give an awkward open mouthed sort of response when someone says something like that. I'll tell them that I disagree, but I'm surprised to need to deal with someone saying something like that.

Alaska tends to be a little bit behind on everything, and perhaps a little less enlightened that other places that I've lived.

It can be difficult. I'll admit, there have been times when I hear racist things or jokes and I have been kinda quiet.

Keep disagreeing and prod them gently in the right direction. You don't need to get into constant debates with people, as that is just tiring and gets you nowhere, but certainly always challenge it.

I would tell them I disagree also. One of my brothers sometimes sends me supposedly funny emails that can be racist or homophobic and I really dislike them a lot, but don´t know how to tell him I don´t appreciate them. I just delete them, but it still bothers me.

To me when it comes to racism I feel like people are just being ignorant, all people should be treated the same regardless of there sex, color or religion, its just my opinion
