Visiting Penny Lane

"Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes..." ♫ ♪ ♫

Yes, that is quite true- it's in my ears all day long! Truth be told, I have been singing this Beatles' song in my head since yesterday afternoon! My husband is already laughing at me because out of nowhere, I would just belt out that line. Even my four year old son, Carl is singing with me (although he can only say "Penny Lane.. ears.. eyes ^_^)

Anyway, for those who are familiar with The Beatles, they surely have heard this song. It was released with 'Strawberry Fields Forever' months before Sgt. Pepper's and reached Number 1 in the UK and in the US. It immortalized the street near where John Lennon grew up (he stayed in Newcastle Road which is near Penny Lane) and where he and McCartney would meet to catch a bus.

What I love about the song is the melody and the contrasting lyrics - there's the suburban skies, pouring rain and even winter. Majority of the song was written by Paul McCartney but it was credited as another partnership of Lennon and McCartney.

Should I be given the chance to visit UK, I will surely look for this place and have tons of photos taken with the Penny Lane street sign! :)

I love that song too. It is upbeat and poetic. Great Lennon/McCartney.

One of my favorite Beatles' songs. I think the same as you, given the chance to go to UK, I'll definitely go and see Penny Lane myself and say I've been to the place that the Beatles sang about.

It's a great song. It's funny how I haven't heard it in years but I could sing all the words to it right now, no problem. That's the thing with Beatles songs. You never forget the words.

soupdragon That's true. Even my father who hasn't listened to Penny Lane for years was able to sing along when I played it for him the other night. He was even crying!

Penny Lane is one of their great songs. I was lucky enough recently to hear a group called The Beatle Boys and they were very good.
