Race Report: SoCal Half in Irvine

This morning I ran a half marathon (13.1 miles) for my race team/club, A Snail's Pace. I run races regularly but I haven't actually RACED since Oct - I am usually officially or personally pacing, meaning I am given a certain goal time and I run that time to help other people. Today was just for me!

I don't usually get nerves either, but the last race I did was smaller, this one had over 6000 runners last year! Roughly two thirds of the race participants are from SRLA - Students Run LA, a program for mostly middle school and high school students. The kids who are part of this program join and begin training for their big spring event which is the Asics Los Angeles Marathon. They are coached and train daily/weekly to prepare, and have several smaller races leading up to the marathon, the Holiday Half in Dec, the SoCal Half in Jan, and I think at least one more.

This was my first year running this particular half, AND my first race for the Snail's Pace store, so I wasn't familiar with the course, and I was under some pressure to do well. I'm pretty pleased overall, the race was very organized, good bib pickup and registration area, great start and finish, good race support. I didn't exactly hit my goal, I was hoping for a place. I ran a 1:37:58, 246 out of 4432, 24th for gender, 9th for age group.

Odd little tidbit - our medals were mis-printed and say 2014 instead of 2015. Way to go Kaiser!! (who sponsored the race)

Congrats irun I would not have the stamina to write a post after a half marathon... ha ha.. after the race you take some time off to recover or go back to training? Do you train for a particular race/time during the year?

Sorry to hear that the medals were misdated, that is quite an error that should have been caught well before delivery to the venue.

Good job! I don't think I would be aable to do it. Well I could but I wouldn't be very fast at it. I love to walk but hate to run even though I was on the track team in high school and loved it!

It sounds like it was a great race! We have family in Socal, and it seems like there are a lot of races and marathons in the area.

Oddly enough nbaquero , I have a race every weekend this month, and 3 weekends in Feb. I had Camarillo on the 3rd, SoCal Half on the 10th, I have Carlsbad this weekend, and West Hills on the 25th. I really have no off season, I run all year. When I first started the idea of doing this was nuts but now that I run almost every day, it's just part of life.

Right? I didn't even notice, it was a friend of mine that mentioned it. I looked down and sure enough, he was right!

PattyTherre - what events did you do in track? I did distance, 1600 and 3200. I have no knowledge or understanding of field events and I am way too slow at sprint/short distances to ever have been or be competitive with the majority of short distance runners.

Damn skippy! I am most definitely a race-ist -- and a serial race-ist to boot! I have a race every weekend in January!

iRun wrote on January 15, 2015, 5:09 PM

Thanks! That's always the goal - to have a good time!

iRun wrote on January 15, 2015, 5:11 PM

Oh LOTS! There are several options to choose from practically every weekend! I just don't usually discover that I signed up for something EVERY weekend for two months - AFTER I had already signed up!

iRun I just heard on the radio the ad for the Miami Marathon and Half-marathon on the 25th. You could probably run it in the future. I know is a trans-con trip but who knows. Good luck in all your races. Hope to read those race reports.
