Quote for Today

" All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me... You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you." - Walt Disney

When I read this quote today I knew I had to write about what it means to me. I have had quite a bit of adversity in my life (starting as a child). I had someone in my life during my childhood that was not physically abusive; however she was mentally abusive. For many years, I thought I was the problem.

At eighteen (one week after high school graduation) I got married. I then quickly had my first daughter. We did not have much money at all. We had three children total. At the time I was a stay at home Mom. I quickly learned how to do without.

While my children were still very young, my husband and I divorced. I had to start out in the work force and take care of the children. The ex was not too active in the children's lives. I then hooked up with my second husband. He was wonderful. However, he was diagnosed with lung cancer when he was only 38. While he beat the cancer, he got addicted to pain medications during all of this. By the end he was a totally different person. He was hit by a tractor trailer 9 days before his 41st birthday.

I look back on my past and smile though. If I had not gone through what I had (and lots of therapy) I would not be the person I am today. I am in a very stable relationship. I now realize that now matter what happens I can survive. I have 3 wonderful grown children. I can count my blessings today thanks to my struggles.
