To Keep Open House

Does anyone keep open house any more? This where guests and even strangers can guarantee hospitality from you 24/7, helping themselves to any of your food and drink, watch your TV, sleep over etc.

Nowadays it’s a good way to be exploited and robbed blind, as guests, gate-crashers and rent free free-loaders become one and the same thing.

While happy to invite friends round for visits, there are limits on the time they can spend, which rooms they can access, which beers are out for them, etc. When it gets to time for them to depart, they are likely to be told to go.

Similarly, in visiting others, I never exploit their hospitality or overstay my welcome.

Have you ever kept open house?

I used to quite a few years back, but I was used and taken advantage of for my trusting nature.. It will never happen again!

I can say I've never kept an open house or even participated in one. While it seems like a very nice idea it just seems to be too dangerous to do in the times we live now.

Being hospitable is nice but to have that exploited and taken advantage of is not.

Things are harder than before. There are some things we used to do that we do not do them anymore

I certainly never have to that extent - but we've frequently dropped what we're doing in order to feed and sympathise with an unexpected guest!

I never have. I had a room mate who did many years ago and it drove me batty. I was teacher and needed time a home to prepare classes. Then rest!

Open House for me always meant a party where guests can drop in and leave whenever they prefer, usually within a designated time frame. Never heard of your kind...
