More about Emoticons at Persona Paper

I saw a recent post from Bestwriter about the use of emoticons here at PersonaPaper , she refers to an earlier guide created by Ashley back in May, 2014, however I found out that it was missing some information, so I decided to devote some time to create a short guide (mainly to educate myself) but hopefully for everyone that likes to use them.

Basically, here at PersonaPaper you can add emoticons in two ways:

1. Typing a word between colons for instance " " will show emoticon  (I added quotation marks for illustration purposes, but in order to add the emoticons just remove the quotation marks)

2. The second way is by writing the ASCII symbol, for instance " :-) " will produce emoticon  which is the same emoticon we got in Step 1.

I took Ashley's original post and added both ways of generating those emoticons. The table below is sorted alphabetically and shows both ways of adding those emoticons.

NOTE: Don't include the quotation marks, those were added for illustration purposes only

NAME WORD SYMBOL (ASCII)
Angry emoticon :angry: ":angry:" ":-||"
Broken-heart </3 N/A "</3"
Cool emoticon  "" "|-O"
Crying emoticon :crying: ":crying:" ":'-("
Devil emoticon  N/A "}:-)"
Grin emoticon  "" ":-D"
Halo emoticon :halo: ":halo:" "0:-)"
Heart <3 N/A <3
Kiss emoticon  "" Not Found*
Not-talking emoticon :not-talking: ":not-talking:" ":-X"
Sad emoticon  "" ":-("
Scared emoticon :scared: ":scared:" ":-O"
Smile emoticon  "" ":-)"
Straight-face emoticon :straight-face: ":straight-face:" ":-|"
Tongue emoticon  "" ":-p"
Winking emoticon :winking: ":winking:" ";-)"

* I did not find an ASCII equivalent for kiss that would work here, if anyone knows please let me know.

Note for the Admins ( MaeLou and elitecodex ) I found out that sometimes spaces between words get deleted. I know melody23 reported this, but while creating this post I saw it a couple of time and had to add extra spaces for the emoticons to work. It doesn't happen all of the time though.

I don't really like emoticons in articles. In Facebook posts, they are fine. But I think they are rarely useful in longer posts. There are exceptions, of course. I find them distracting me from the written text, which is what I hope to get the information in the article from.

AngelSharum wrote on January 7, 2015, 11:52 AM

Nice tutorial. The only one I use most of the time is the smiley face. I have noticed words bunching together on articles a lot.

Kat- wrote on January 7, 2015, 12:00 PM

Thanks for taking the time to make this post. I usually use emoticons in comments only, not for articles themselves. I'm going to save this so I can keep referring to it in case I forget any. Thanks again!

GayleStorm wrote on January 7, 2015, 12:10 PM

Wow, it must've taken quite a while to create that table. Nicely done! And thanks from the rest of us!

MaeLou wrote on January 7, 2015, 12:50 PM

We're aware of the space sometimes disappearing and we're looking into the why. Sometimes emoticons don't show up randomly either, and we're also looking into the cause of that too.

maramadalina wrote on January 7, 2015, 3:55 PM

ha ha ha I love these emoticons. I use them very often because I think that such emoticons are very expressive . emoticon :winking:

Louemham wrote on January 7, 2015, 5:35 PM

Thank you for the information. I have been wondering how to add emoticons on Persona Paper articles/comments since I arrived here.

vanGogh wrote on January 7, 2015, 7:04 PM

thanks you are very helpful; am printing this one and leaving it at my desk for reference..thanks also for flagging Admin about missing spaces between word

BarbRad wrote on January 7, 2015, 10:21 PM

Thanks for putting this all in one place for us. I didn't see my favorite -- "embarrassed."

bestwriter wrote on January 7, 2015, 10:39 PM

Well done. Indeed a good effort
I am just experimenting for 'kiss' Let's see if it emerges

bestwriter wrote on January 7, 2015, 10:40 PM

May be colon on either side?

bestwriter wrote on January 7, 2015, 10:52 PM

Has not worked. I will be at it. We need a rofl l and lol badly emoticon

rana199426 wrote on January 8, 2015, 12:05 AM

Oh thank you, I didn't know that we had to use these to get our emoticons showing lol because I once tried this smiley " : ) " but it didn't show so yeah thank you :) I followed you btw.

Ruby3881 wrote on January 8, 2015, 5:11 AM

This is a great resource! I'll be bookmarking and sharing it so we can all use more of these fun emoticons. It's - well

I've noticed the issue with spaces going missing on a lot of posts recently. Not sure what's p, but I do know the system here sometimes changes spacing when there's formatting involved. You can only see the changes if you go into the source code, though. They don't show up in the submit/edit if you're looking at the post in the WYSIWYG editor.

Ruby3881 wrote on January 8, 2015, 5:15 AM

I tried to use the emoticon  emoticon below, but it didn't work. I wonder if emoticon  works? I also noticed that even in the post, the hearts didn't work. I have seen some users who were able to get hearts into posts or comment, though they seem not to be the

Ruby3881 wrote on January 8, 2015, 5:17 AM

I think I'm seeing an example of what the admin said was random malfunctioning of the emoticons! Both the methods worked this time whereas the "" method failed below....

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:30 AM

Hi Anja I did this for illustration purposes. I do agree that emoticons are not meant for written text in a post, but they can enhance the comments, if used sparingly, like a little smiley at the end.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:38 AM

Yes Kat- I do the same, only use emoticons in the comments.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:39 AM

Thanks GayleStorm it wasn't that bad, it took me about a hours. Hope this helps.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:40 AM

MaeLou thanks for your response, I know you guys are always on top of theses little bugs.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:42 AM

Maramadalina Emoticons give a simple comment a little more expression as you say.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:45 AM

&Louemhan , that was in part the reason why I decided to share this information with everyone.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:46 AM

I am glad you find this useful &VanGohg , Andmins are always very proactive in finding solutions for those problems.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:48 AM

AngelSharum , Me too, I use mainly the smiley emoticon. The dissaperaing spaces is not a big issue at the moments, but it has been going on for a few weeks now. Hopefully it can be solved soon.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:54 AM

No problem BarbRad
Ok, I found :-$ but it doesn't work, and the word embarrased doesn't work either. It seems it is not enabled at PersonaPaper. I am so "embarrased" now emoticon :winking:

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:56 AM

I did the same, I tried several options for kiss but none of them worked. Not a big deal. We can always use the emoticon  option. That is ""

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 11:58 AM

Thanks so muhc Ruby3881 I know the Admins are working on it, and will soon find a solution.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 12:02 PM

You are welcome, rana199426 and thanks for the follow.

FreyaYuki wrote on January 8, 2015, 12:07 PM

So many emoticons! Just learned how to do the emoticon  and the emoticon  on another post. Apparently, I was missing the dash, which was why it wasn't working. Also experienced the problem with spaces. On the text editor, it looks perfect but, when you look at the post itself, it isn't. Adding extra spaces on the editor fixes the problem but this can easily be overlooked.

FreyaYuki wrote on January 8, 2015, 12:10 PM

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date. Hope the issues with the spaces and the emoticons gets resolved soon.

seren3 wrote on January 8, 2015, 12:56 PM

Cool chart! I like emoticons used sparingly. They can be expressive, but don't replace words.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 12:59 PM

Seren3 Thanks, I also got to practice creating tables here at PersonaPaper

suzagrace9 wrote on January 8, 2015, 3:09 PM

This is a nice list of emoticons. I, too, agree that they don't necessarily have a place within a post. However, I don't see anything wrong with using them in comments. Thank you.

nbaquero wrote on January 8, 2015, 3:10 PM

You are welcome suzagrace9 I think that is pretty much the consensus over here.

bestwriter wrote on January 8, 2015, 7:50 PM

Discretion here is the better part of valour emoticon  emoticon

BarbRad wrote on January 8, 2015, 9:48 PM

You tried. Thanks.

trufflehunter wrote on January 10, 2015, 3:29 AM

Aww this is cool. Am not a huge fan of emoticons in articles but I use them a lot when texting friends!

nbaquero wrote on January 10, 2015, 7:18 AM

trufflehunter Thanks, I see that most of us think alike regarding the use of emoticons.

nbaquero wrote on January 10, 2015, 7:20 AM

Hi Anja if you read the comments, it looks like we all share the same idea with you regarding the use of emoticons.

grandma20121 wrote on January 15, 2015, 4:41 PM

I find these emoticons really confusing still, i surely wish you could actually show the smiley face itself and not the confusing symbols, I am not so sure I will be using them right away.

nbaquero wrote on January 16, 2015, 7:40 AM

grandma20121 you can always used the words listed in the table, just add colons to the beginning and the end of the word, that way you don't have to remember the confusing symbols, for instance writing "" (without the quotation marks) should show emoticon

CountryWine wrote on January 17, 2015, 11:24 AM

A friend of mine directed me to this post of yours. It's very helpful.

shiela32 wrote on January 19, 2015, 3:43 PM

Thanks for the information. I am fond of using emoticons but I don't know how to display it. emoticon

Golumolu wrote on January 26, 2015, 1:17 PM

Such a great article! I edited and re-edited my post but the emoticon  was not working and that made me search for and land on your post... well it still is not working but the reason is I have not tried yet emoticon :winking: So I want to bookmark this post (not on the browser) but have no idea how to do that. Guess will learn that gradually. We are not in a a hurry, are we? Have a great day *_*

Golumolu wrote on January 26, 2015, 1:26 PM

Oooh it appeared even without the dash! I need to be more careful lest people find me scary... lol

nbaquero wrote on January 26, 2015, 3:52 PM

golumolu Glad to know this post helped. I know there are still a few hiccups but for the most part it works fine emoticon

Golumolu wrote on January 26, 2015, 4:52 PM

Right! :) Am sure someone will send kisses on your way very soon... I'll pray.

Kasman wrote on January 29, 2015, 3:06 PM

Great article. I don't really use emoticons in a post but I will occasionally add one to a comment.

nbaquero wrote on January 29, 2015, 3:07 PM

Thanks Kasman I do the same, I don't add them to the posts, but usually put one in my comments. Like here emoticon
