Honesty is the only policy

Following on from recent events I find myself questioning how and why people lie.

Lying is the one thing that my children knew from a very young age is totally unacceptable. Sometimes the truth will hurt but that does not mean that the only alternative is to lie. We do have the choice to not say anything at all or dig for some positive in any situation and comment on that or present the truth along with reasonable and honest information.

What is really to be gained from lying? If you gain something through lies it will not have the same sense of achievement of obtaining the gains through honest means. Surely therefore, lying actually costs the liar.

Personally I could never lie even if it didn't repulse me as it does, I simply don't have the memory for it. How do you remember who you have told various versions to? I would tie myself in knots within five minutes. I struggle to maintain the tooth fairy, Santa and so on. I have to consider that I am repeating a traditional story and that it is part of the magic of life and not a lie.

I can assure you that I will never lie to you and I think it is important that people know that and understand that when I give praise to people or offer support it is genuine.

I don't know why people lie but those people should know that lies hurt those around them.

I think it was Walter Scott who wrote: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive"?

Lol I can picture my children hanging their heads at that, its a quote they have heard all of their lives and I even had it made into a tapestry and it hangs outside their bedroom doors

I'm not sure that they think about others at all when lying other than to make one of two assumptions, either they think the person they lie to is too stupid to see the truth or is not capable of handling the truth

hahaha, but it's a very good quote to keep implanted in their heads

Like you say "you have to have a good memory to be a lier" It is wrong to lie full stop. If I find out someone has lied to me , I wonder what else they have lied about. The trust goes.
